elderly drivers

All that didn't stop some twat driving into the back of me at a motorway peage in Spain
. We were the only cars on the motorway, he could have chosen another booth, but decided to use my hire car as a brake...
With the size of those things and the amount of signage and lights...how does someone do that. Unless they were looking at the signs and lights perhaps.....

Unfortunately Spain has a dismal record when it comes to road accident fatalities.
Added to that I cannot believe how many cars you see with side damage.

They must have tightened things up in the last 10 years or so. The amount of untaxed, uninsured and un MOT'd ( ITV in Spain ) expat cars running around the less populated rural areas was a joke ( ourselves included in UK registered RHD cars ) Only when we bought a Spanish plated car did we stick to the rules. The MOT ( ITV ) stations were like a rolling rd come production line, you stayed in the car and drove it down an inspection line past various mechanics performing various tests, tractors in front, artic units behind for eg, really easy. IIRC trailers also needed an ITV test.

I'll give the Spanish one thing, the roads are relatively quiet outside the major citys and they know how to set up rolling rd blocks. I've seen a helicopter land on the AP7 and the traffic never stopped and hedge trimming for the central reservation is a joy to watch, even seen a motorway bridge removed and the traffic never stopped, over here it would be shut for weeks with scores of blokes in hi viz vests standing around pointing.

Very few UK plated cars ie without Spanish plates now. All UK plated cars can be checked by police in Spain automatically for insurance in UK etc..
Speeding fines now in the form of an invoice immediately generated payable at the post office (half price if paid early like parking fines).
Identity cards with fingerprints issued by the police are now compulsory so no card why are you in the country? On holiday so where are you stopping, and show us 80 euros a day to support yourself etc..
I'm sure some still under radar but difficult if stopped by police.
