Electric cars

Think we will also have to rethink the way we travel as self driving cars become common rental by the hour could become common place similar to cabs but without the expense of a driver.
the major stumbling block for self driving cars remains in place.
Who is liable in the case of an accident?
at the moment, the liability is with the driver.
When the driver is an AI, who is responsible? the passenger? the person who owns the AI? The manufacturer? the designer?
Until thats sorted, self driving cars are not going to happen.
If the liability ends up with the manufacturer or the designer, the cost of the car will sky rocket to cover the liability cost
If the liability ends up with the owner, then cost of a hire service will skyrocket as they will have to carry insurance for the laibility.
if passengers become liable then no one will use a hire service

All good points would guess the liability would remain with the owner and as the AI technology is proven to be at least as safe as an Uber driver premiums should be similar.

The owner of a hire car would be a business.
The liability for an accident involving loss of life is currently limited because the driver is an individual with finite resources and the ultimate sanction is jail time.
With a business there liability is higher because a business has higher resources up to an including the entire value of the company. Add to that any jail time would then have to be assumed by the owner of the company or responsible board member. Who the hell would assume that risk with no control of the technology rolled out by elon musk et al?

Not something we will sort here time will tell.

Thinking of trading in my diesel for a Kia E-Niro or similar.

You can get some good lease deals these days that'll work out cheaper than running my fully-owned vehicle.

I don't own an electric car yet - but once enough infrastructure is in place - my car's gonna be a Jeep.

Good news today - the UK has 26k charging points. The industry reckons we need over 1m.
There are only 6% of qualified mechanics qualified to work on EV's
Grant Shapps thinks we are doing just fine.
Good luck non-petrolheads
In fairness there's bugger all to go wrong on a fully EV and the bits that go wrong on hybrids tend to be on the ICE part. Steering, suspension and brake components are likely to be similar to ICE cars apart from anything linked to regenerative braking.
However the bits related to the drive systems that can go wrong on EVs and hybrids are bloody expensive.
Another issue with mechanics is that additional precautions have to be taken to carry out some jobs on hybrids and EVs. Main dealers are made aware of these but others may not be.

From what I've seen they can be dangerous in the wrong hands due to the high voltage dc currents involved? And the battery fires when they go up are horrendous, they can stay alight internally for days, with massive temperatures involved. The only way to make safe is to drop the whole car in a skip full of water apparently. Even a small Lipo battery fire is a nasty affair.
