Electric cars

Leaving out that it's still more inconvenient having to charge more than you would go to a petrol stations.

One of the biggest issues is that ...you're going to be paying more than just having a petrol car.

A VW ID3 with a 62kwh battery (58kwh usable) would cost £40.60 on a public charger costing 70p per KWH. That gives you a real world range of around 215 miles.

£40.60 / 215 = 18p per mile.

An equivalent VW Golf I would expect to have around double that range (400 miles) with a 50 fuel litre tank. At £1.35 a litre that's £67.50

£67.50 / 400 = 16.8p per mile.
Throw in the current massive depreciation on electric cars and they just don't make sense economically.

My last car was a diesel, £300pm on lease, £500 per year road tax, £300 per year to service and 2 years ago it was £70 per week to fill up.

The Tesla costs me £2 to charge, no servicing, just £400pm on lease so no depreciation to worry about. Financially it was a no brainer when compared to what I previously had.

That will probably change in 2 years when my lease runs out since we now have EV road tax, higher interest rates and EV depreciation has dropped off a cliff. It's just not as lucrative as it was 2 years ago and forget 3 years ago when charging was effectively free.

I've read about synthetic fuels but really they're no different to regular fuels as they have limited total effect. They still need refining, processing and transporting which isn't carbon neutral by any stretch.
I dont generally lease cars, normally buy outright. The EV via salary sacrifice from a tax point of view however made sense due to the 2% BIK and it uses up a chunk of my additional rate tax. Without that incentive I really wouldn't have bothered.

Yep, exactly why I did it. I wouldn’t have considered one if it wasn’t under those circumstances.

Ordered my 1st electric car yesterday from Motabilty. Absolute no brainer for me tbh, free charger installed at home too. Change it after 3 years for another and hopefully better range.

What have you gone for? A mate has just got a Hyundai Ionic5 on Motability. He had to put three grand towards it but that's bugger all compared to depreciation over three years.
Lovely car, but bloody wide which is causing the occasional issue as he hasn't driven for three years.

I'm not interested in one until you can charge at any charger (like a petrol station) and can charge the car with the same range to full as fast as you can fill up a petrol car.

Otherwise it's a backwards step surely?
They don't have to charge as fast. Because most charge at home overnight.
Next year some cars will be able to do 600 miles. Nobody normally drives 600 miles a day.
Imagine your petrol car has a full tank each morning without going to a fuel station at all. And for £10-£12!
Apart from some Tesla chargers, all chargers can be used by any EV. Eventually all Tesla chargers will be open to all cars.

I agree you have to think differently. But they have benefits that ICE cars cannot match.
It is only when you own one that you see the propaganda against them. I would say that not all EV's are great though.
The better ones are amazing. But as ever, the price then goes up and EV's are only just starting to hold their used prices.

Instant throttle response shames any ICE car. Turbo lag and gear changes are a thing of the past. Leaving expensive ICE cars for dead is also somewhat fun. Smooth and seamless (savage) acceleration without a fuss is addictive. All while not worrying about something going bang.

Servicing costs on an ICE car are out of control. The emission stuff on them kills them. Regular serving makes not difference if part of the exhaust gas has to pass back through the air intake, clogging it up. Timing chains can mean an engine out job. DPF's/injectors give no end of trouble. Been there done that etc.

EV's are not for everyone, i get that. But they are not what is portrayed in the press and social media.
Some people have agendas and interests for them not to be adopted.
If you get a bad one or there aren't many chargers, or you cannot home charge. Then i get why people don't want one. But like them or not, they are the future of motoring.
