Re: Eliaquim Mangala

I'm just gonna say it now, I believe Joel Veltman will be a better defender than Mangala in 2 years, and he will cost at most 10 million. Why we want the unproven 30 million guy, beats me.

Watch Veltman end up at Spurs or Napoli, only for us to want him in 2 years for 40 million. :(

Posted something similar the other day and got my arse handed to me

Not sure why we need to go and spend £30-£40 million on a centre back when we have a spending cap

There are plenty around that will do a very good job for us for half that money

We won't find anyone of Vinnys quality about, and we don't need someone of that quality, we just need someone who is capable at CL level and who can play the system, paying the money above doesn't always guarantee that

The notion that price determines quality is silly, I think, and sure I could end up wrong in the long run, that Veltman is just straight up a better footballer than Mangala. Better Ball skill, tactical awareness and all round defender. Mangala is bigger stronger and more athletic. Mangala is pretty much Sahko with a bit more skill, and Veltman is probably more like Kolcieny. So they are different types of defenders, I think Veltman will turn out the better defender, but even if I'm wrong, I don't think the difference will be worth the wasted millions. Mangala is no Kompany. We should stop mistaking the price tag for level of talent. He is behind Sahko because Sahko is currently better. And while he is young at 23, so is Veltman at 22. Variance is Younger, yet he is a starter.
I'd rather have Veltman at 1/3. The cost.

Van Gaal obviously rates him. Isnt it likely Veltman will follow him to the swamp?

Re: Eliaquim Mangala

You seem to have a real hard on for Veltman, I have to admit I've barely heard of him. He looks, on paper, like a guy with one year of playing in the Eredivise, who as of yet, can't get ahead of some pretty average CB's in the Dutch NT. If you're going to use the arguament that Sakho is better than Mangala because he's in the team ahead of him, then Veltman is worse than Ron Vlaar, Bruno Martins Indi and Stefan De Vrij.

Obviously I'm not saying he's not a good player, as I've literally never seen him play, but your logic regarding Mangala is flawed. Veltman would be a huge gamble, based on his complete lack of experience at any level

Re: Eliaquim Mangala

Unless someone watches Mangala and his rival young defenders every week all season like our scouts must do, can we make a definitive claim that he is worse than so-and-so? Mangala has been on the radar of pretty much every top club in Europe and there has to be a reason for this. All of these clubs employ some of the best scouts available who will see things that we probably can't begin to understand. Sakho was wanted by very few clubs in comparison and ended up at a club without Champions League football.

Re: Eliaquim Mangala

If we had no spending cap then id say go for it as he's clearly got potential to be a top class centre back

But my arguement is that there are players out there for half the money that are of the required standard now

Why would we pay that money for someone so young who isn't at his potential best yet?

Re: Eliaquim Mangala

How about we pay $30M for Hummels and pay him $5M/year for three years?
Much better deal than Mangala 45M?

Do Hummels and Dortmund get a say in that ?

Actually there is nothing wrong with my argument here, I'm not using Mangala being behind Sahko to show he is not as good as Veltman, rather it's simply to put in context what his current talent level may be. He is behind Varane and Sahko, 2 players many here have seen enough of. So all I'm saying is that he is no Kompany, and we shouldn't be fooled by the supposed price tag. It seems anytime anyone brings up the name of a good defender, the response is "he is not at the level we are looking for" a position that tends to assume Benatia and Mangala somehow defines that Level. I am simply pointing out that Mangala is not at that level either.

And yes on a personal note, I'd rather have Veltman. (my opinion here; and I am no scout nor have I watched every game they've both played; and l agree with lovecity that scouts 'should' know more) but from what I've seen of both, I'd take Veltman. Especially at 1/3 the cost. Coz I believe the risk of success are similar.
