The Blues expect to sign the French defender but Manuel Pellegrini has suggested they have other options if the deal falls through.
City are still confident of completing the signing of Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala - but Manuel Pellegrini has hinted they are not prepared to wait forever.
The 23-year-old Frenchman has already visited Manchester and a video announcing the £32m capture was leaked on the club’s website last month.
But a week before the start of the new season, the deal has still not been finalised.
Pellegrini refused to discuss Mangala at his press conference ahead of tomorrow’s Community Shield with Arsenal at Wembley.
City have also been linked with a move for Roma defender Mehdi Benatia.
And Pellegrini hinted the club have other options if the deal for Mangala falls through at the last minute.
He said: “I always say the same answer, when things are finished we can talk about that. For the moment he is not our player.
“It doesn’t matter how close it is. For the moment he is not our player.
“I don’t talk about specific players. I say that we have all the month of August to see what we are going to do.”
And Pellegrini added that if City do need to find a Plan B, he will decide who to target along with director of football Txiki Begiristain and chief executive Ferran Soriano.
He said: “We all decide together. What I need, they try to bring it. If I don’t need it, they will not bring it.”
