Who was the last player to have made a reputation for themself in Italy who was actually a success in the premier league? I feel like there must have been someone more recent than Zola, but for the life of me I can't think of anyone. I can think of a decent list of failures though without much thought
Henry, Bergkamp, Di Canio, Ravanelli, Carbone, Vialli, Di Matteo, Stefano Eranio, Crespo, Van der Sar, Vieira, Desailly
Coutinho? Nastasic? Kolarov?

Jovetic will join that list shortly too

Lets be honest, that list has a very 90's feel to it, when Serie A was a very different league. Coutinho was not much of a success in Italy (neither were Henry or Vieira) and it's pretty generous to say Kolarov or Nastasic have been "successes" as such, Kolarov has been decent but never looked like a £20m leftback, whereas Nastasic still has a lot to prove. I'm obviously not writing off the entire league, but I'm more saying that it is not a league where the skills required to succeed are particularly conjusive to the English game. It's probably the league with the least in common with the premier league in my opinion

was he shit apart from his piss poor clearance?

Why do we consider a bad pass or a bad game to be the kiss of death and we should consider staying well clear. There isn't one player on the planet past or present who hasn't had a mare of a game at some point. It seams because we are interested in someone, we should look for all the reasons why we shouldn't sign them.

I know nothing of this player but from the many many comments written here and in the tabloids, he does appear to have many many better days than off days

I do take your point about running for the hills after just one error BUT (and its a big BUT) - Porto are asking circa £40m for this guy and mistakes must be at an absolute minimum for that kind of money - that's the difference between a £25m and £40m player - you are buying (in theory) the absolute best.

The clearance wasn't even THAT bad, he tried to direct it away, Frankfurt player also got a piece of it and Alex Sandro puts into the back of the net. Outside of that he was keeping Frankfurt at bay and would look really well partnered with VK.

I have watched him a lot on TV over the last 6 months,he is not worth 40m IMO

I don't anything about him but it makes laugh when people talk of the values of a particular player, like they actually know how it's worked out, and how much a deal is really worth

According to the media, were going back with a cheque for £57m for Mangala and Fernando. That seams a big hike up from last month.

It's a lot considering we should have had one of them for free, but if that was going to kill the chances of the other it wouldn't have been that good. If there's one thing the signing of Fernandinho should have taught us, it's that other than being able to argue about squad costs with the red tops and your mates down the pub, if they're worth it they're worth it, and everything else is irrelevant.

If 57m gets us Kompany's world class partner we've needed, and gets us the midfielder allowing us to rotate out Fernandinho and Yaya without compromising the integrity of Pellegrini's attacking system, then sold.

Re: Eliaquim Mangala

I prefer that we buy a £5-£10 million defender. Why do always need to buy one player for £25-£35 million.
