Re: Eliaquim Mangala

Ironically, just got sent off giving away a penalty. Very soft though tbh, he was trying his hardest to not foul the man and a slight touch at worst, but an important lesson non the less

According to the media, were going back with a cheque for £57m for Mangala and Fernando. That seams a big hike up from last month.

It's a lot considering we should have had one of them for free, but if that was going to kill the chances of the other it wouldn't have been that good. If there's one thing the signing of Fernandinho should have taught us, it's that other than being able to argue about squad costs with the red tops and your mates down the pub, if they're worth it they're worth it, and everything else is irrelevant.

If 57m gets us Kompany's world class partner we've needed, and gets us the midfielder allowing us to rotate out Fernandinho and Yaya without compromising the integrity of Pellegrini's attacking system, then sold.

This.

No one can argue that Fernandinho wasnt worth the money now as seen against Chelsea, he is integral to this team, and if it takes 40M to find the world class centre back we so need and who would become an integral part of our spine, then so be it. Hell be worth it.

Re: Eliaquim Mangala

I posted this in the Van Dijk thread, but I suppose it's equally relevant here...

The way I see it is this;

The SPL is a fairly rubbish league, but Celtic themselves are at least thereabouts to European standard, so their players can't be so easily discounted.

We're looking closely at Mangala who is a (recently) 23 yr old, 6'2, left-footed CB, who has played once for France as a full international and is (allegedly) valued at £38m.

We're also considering Van Dijk, who is a 22 yr old, 6'4, right-footed CB, who as yet - as far as I can tell - to play as a full international, but has been capped often at U21 level, and is valued somewhere around £10m.

Leaving aside the issue of whether we would prefer a left-sided CB to partner Vinny, the issue for me boils down to whether Mangala is £28m better than Van Dijk; both are supposedly 'commanding' and assured in possession, both have played plenty of international football, both are roughly the same age and both come from very lopsided leagues. Unless there is demonstrably a huge gap in class and ability, honestly I'd prefer the Dutchman.

With MDM very much a stop-gap, Rekik and the kids (i.e Denayer) unproven or not ready, Kompany becoming a tad injury-prone and Lescott on the way out, we could feasibly buy both, FFP notwithstanding.

Imagine a CB set of Kompany, Mangala, Van Dijk and Nastasić. Fun times.

Re: Eliaquim Mangala

In January I was desperate for us toget Mangala, but I was just so desperate for us to get any decent looking center half in.

Looking at it now, does he really justify his price tag? I know many say he is the most promising center half in Europe but that is based on performances in the Portuguese League.

I just think there are plenty of decent center halves around for cheaper prices, and plus I just think just because he looks individually excellent, how do we know when partnered with Vinny it will work?

I trust in Txiki but for 40m that could arguably buy us any center half in the world, so Mangala better be special if we are choosing him, for that money I would want one of the best center halves of this generation, we will see!

Re: Eliaquim Mangala

Seriously, unless we can find someone hugely better than Lescott, why are we not agreeing an extension with him that will cost just wages.

Any purchase will be inflated, cost a long term wage deal and is a gamble as regards to success. May I remind everyone Lescott was the partner of Kompany for the FA Cup, Premier League, Charity Shield and 1-6 at United. Why is he not starting. As purely a defender, he is arguably as good as Kompany. Furthermore he never gets injured!

Of course we know what the answer is; it's that City thing that has cursed us for years, the basic inability to do the sensible thing when it's needed.

In short, resign Lescott and play him.

There's your problem. We need someone who is comfortable in possession and will defend on the front foot like Kompany. Lescott is not that player.

Re: Eliaquim Mangala

I'd prefer us to go all out for Vertonghen than Mangala or the Dutch lad from Celtic.
He knows the league, not only that but he is one of the best defenders playing in it already, he knows Kompany from the national team too.
Levy like normal would demand top dollar, but not as much were rumoured to be happy to pay Porto for Mangala.
