Usually when we find news on Manchester City and Eliaquim Mangala it comes from Portugal, where the clubs are very close to the media and release information often, sometimes just to try and up interest in a player. This time the claims are from France and Le10 Sport who claim an exclusive on Monday evening.
They say that Manchester City and Porto have agreed a deal for Mangala at €45m, which is just €5m less than the player's huge buyout clause of €50m. The 23 year old has a contract with Porto until June 2016 and now could be the time the Portuguese club are able to cash in.
Mangala is certainly talented and full of potential but last season wasn't a 100% easy ride and progression for the player. Sport Witness Portuguese football expert Jan Hagen recently wrote a piece for us on Mangala and said 'Mangala will become one of Europe’s best defenders and his talent is indisputable, but his horrible form from November to February has significantly lowered his market price. There’s no one questioning the 23-year-old’s immense physique (who’d dare?) or talent, but the mental part of his game needs to improve if Eliaquim Mangala is ever going to live up to his €50 million release clause. I’d felt ripped off if my club bought Mangala for anything near his release clause, but it wouldn’t be the first time someone paid over the top for a player developed at Porto. With some help from Jorge Mendes, who of course is Mangala’s agent, Pinto da Costa usually gets it as he wants.'
Given the patchy form, Porto will have done very well if they've got €45m from Manchester City for Mangala. Le10 Sport say that the deal is just awaiting approval from the player and could then be completed. Le10 also think that Mangala shouldn't take his time over a decision to join Manchester City, it could be too good an opportunity to miss.
Manchester City will certainly see a player who they would shell out €45m for as first team but the real benefit in Mangala will be when he's got a bit more experience and is truly ready to fulfill his potential.
