Posted this 9 days ago. It’s happening again. We’ll not go beyond £100m for Anderson and will spend about £150-200m over the coming seasons on players that are just not quite good enough when we could have got the one that is good enough for less than that. Sometimes ‘overpaying’ is the right thing to do.
The crucial failure imo was opting not to spend £100m on a Bruno Guimaraes about to enter his prime, and instead ending up spending more on absolute dross. The club thought it could cheap out and instead wasted more money than the potential £100m outlay.
Do not be surprised if the same thing happens again this summer and we balk at the Marinakis valuation for Anderson and instead buy a midfielder that just doesn’t elevate us. I can very much see that happening, but I hope we’ve learned that it’s better to ‘overspend’ on the right player than collect bang average ones.
