Elliot Anderson | Opening bid rejected (p189)

Posted this 9 days ago. It’s happening again. We’ll not go beyond £100m for Anderson and will spend about £150-200m over the coming seasons on players that are just not quite good enough when we could have got the one that is good enough for less than that. Sometimes ‘overpaying’ is the right thing to do.

The crucial failure imo was opting not to spend £100m on a Bruno Guimaraes about to enter his prime, and instead ending up spending more on absolute dross. The club thought it could cheap out and instead wasted more money than the potential £100m outlay.

Do not be surprised if the same thing happens again this summer and we balk at the Marinakis valuation for Anderson and instead buy a midfielder that just doesn’t elevate us. I can very much see that happening, but I hope we’ve learned that it’s better to ‘overspend’ on the right player than collect bang average ones.

Remember when Grealish was such a done deal it was an open secret for almost 6 months and we still ended up having to mess around with villa before paying the exit fee - that
And the deal was spread over years and included bonuses making it up to 100m which were all met.

Hopefully something similar happens here. Player and City clearly want it, we I like to think haven't pissed them off like Spurs did with MGW.

I reckon we pay over 100 with some incentives making it closer to what they want so something like 105 + 10.

115, what a number!!

Completely disagree with your take on Rice. Without him in that midfield, Arsenal aren't winning the league. And he'd have walked into our midfield once Rodders picked up his injury.

I honestly think we'd be sitting on six-in-a-row if we'd have signed him.
I agree and I don’t understand the negative comments about Rice on here. He has been a great signing for Arsenal and the £105m fee looks like a bargain now (unlike the £100m we pissed away on Grealish).

Hahahaha £105m for Declan Rice a bargain but the lad we paid £100m for that was integral in us winning the treble isn't. Class

Which is why I said it would take a really serious injury to put us off buying him.

You really can't do these kind of what ifs. We could sign him after the world cup and he do his ACL in his first training session. It is what it is. Right now he is fit and healthy and that's the player we're trying to sign.
Why do you think it essential to get him signed before the WC? If he's the player of the tournament do you think it would make any difference to the clubs interested? Every club has dossiers on players and know them inside and out. The are only a small number of clubs in position to spend upwards of £100m on a player

It's widely reported he only wants City, he's follows 3 clubs on his Instagram Newcastle, Forest and significantly City. Hugo will know for sure what his position is, and the chances of persuading Forest to buy him.

Exactly, we know Anderson wants to come, so does the Forest owner. The people who are paid a fucking fortune by the club will be negotiating hard to get the best deal that's as de-risked as possible as per what you stated on the Grealish deal

And yes, the price sounds about right although I couldn't really care less. This is a crucial need in our squad and we can't scrimp on the deal

I agree, I think that’s exactly what will happen

One of our fan podcasts yesterday was interviewing the Man City expert at the MEN and he was saying similar.

Anderson is happy with us but nevertheless likely wants the move. City know exactly what top players cost, and it’s hard to argue Elliot should cost much less than Rice, Caicedo or Fernandez. Forest will want the deal to happen once it gets to £100m+, as it helps us improve the broader team.

Personally I’ll be staggered if the deal is for less than £100m.

I think this has been set up for a couple of months and we’re down to the details and the haggling.

The MEN guy also made the point I’ve made, which is that Forest and City seem to get on well at boardroom level (the emergency Ortega deal being a good example). Contrast with Spurs and Man Utd, who both seem to have pissed Marinakis off so much he’s possibly unlikely to deal with them.

‘integral’ lol. Are we still running with this bollocks? Rice has just played in a champions league final & grealish is playing with fucking beto and barry.

Did Grealish play in our champions league final and was he our 5th most played player in that year?! Yes for first two he was average! But he was one of of our main players in our treble season and for me I’d buy him for that 100m if you say yeah he be shit for four years apart from one but you win the treble!

He is the right player for us and there are VERY few of those. Get him signed, price doesn't matter. I hope we have learned from Rice etc. I would like us to win the PL and CL soon and it won't happen if we refuse to pay what's needed for the players we need.

100% this. I just don’t get why any City fan would not agree, it’s not like the club is spending our personal money is it. I don’t care if a player costs £300m if the club want him and he helps us win the title and cups then it’s definitely worth it.

Classic sales tactic, we'll meet in the middle no doubt, £100 maybe £105 with the inevitable add ons, they probably won't be far off £120 when all said and done. He's 23, home grown and already the best CM in the league. He's the golden goose, him alone would be enough to get us over the line next season imo assuming we dont lose Rodri.

If he has a good world cup it wouldnt surprise me if the likes of Bayern/ Madrid come sniffing

I don’t believe the reports last week that City valued him at £80m. They’re serious people - they’re not valuing Anderson at the price of Maguire, or 20pc less than Fernandez/Caicedo. I’m sure they know well that this is a £100m+ deal.

But we didn't value Maguire at that price or Fernandez/ Caicedo at £100m+
Other clubs did

I too dont get the vilification of Rice. He would have been awesome for us as he is for Arsenal and the reason he has only PL title uptill now is because he is managed by the donkey Arteta. The sad part also is we did went through a couple of players when Rice went to Arsenal and none of them have worked out at all.Hell we spend some 50m on Nico one year back and he hardly plays.

Also the Grealish deal was as shit as it gets. Before anyone jumps on me - the treble was the best part of my life too and I appreciate Grealish's role in that but unfortunately in this FFP/PSR/SCR climate just one season of performance isnt good.

In short, good players cost big bucks and we shouldn't reject a deal for another 15m-20m. Our midfield is in tatters and if it requires two 100 million signings to make it elite so be it. Lets get that done and move on. I hate to get another 60 million transfer go to waste.
