People have genuine concerns about they type of content that Twitter will be allowing following Musk's announcement.

You want the Wild West version of Twitter (like 4Chan/8Chan) where Jihadist beheading videos and cartoon kiddie porn is allowed?

How do they ban it?

It's a US based company. The free speech provisions of the First Amendment prevent federal, state, and local governments from directly censoring the Internet (except in extreme circumstances, for instance content that directly leads to the harm of children).

Again, people really need to get their head around the simple fact that anything and everything that the current board of twitter has banned, got banned because it was making Twitter legally liable.

The USA has section 230 which protects them from most stuff, but the USA is only 1/5th of twitters audience and not the one it wants to grow.

If it doesn’t moderate itself, it will get banned in the EU, India and Japan.

The key thing about section 230 however is that the more action twitter takes to moderate the more it becomes responsible for the stuff that is left there.

So by making themselves acceptable to the world outside the US, they lose their protections to not act inside the US.

I think the main reason Twitter moderates its content for is protection against civil litigation.

Self-moderation barely ever really works in the way it is intended.

can’t see how him blocking someone has anything to do with free speech, he’s not stopping anyone else hearing what they’ve got to say just doesn’t want to hear it himself

the fact the tweet thinks there’s any comparison says more about the person tweeting tbf

Well if it were just an individual's account then I would probably agree with you but as this is the official account for an organisation called Public Citizen then I think it's a bit different.

Who they are:

Public Citizen is a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization that champions the public interest in the halls of power. it’s nothing to do with free speech though is it, he’s no cancelling anyone or trying to stop them being heard he just doesn’t want to hear what they’ve got to say

Am I the only person who has never had an issue with saying whatever I want, whenever I want?

I'm often amazed at the number of people who feel that they are unable to express themselves openly. I wonder what it is that they feel like they can't share and what the repercussions would be. That must be a stifling existence.

I doubt Musk's ownership would bring anything more than some surface level changes but I'd hope what he'd bring would be a level of comfort to these people in order to get their views in the open.

That is, as long as this isn't another PR exercise.
