In the mid to late 60s I used to go in the City Social Club with my (now ex) husband who was friends with Roy Clarke and we met a lot of the team who came in after the match for a drink or two. That club was open 7 days a week and my ex frequented it when he wasn't working away. The days when the club encouraged the players to 'mingle' with the fans. As someone once said to me "City was and still is a family club and that was a tribute to Roy and Kathleen and their encouragement". Very true.
Before I got married I used to work not far from where George Best had his shop in Manchester and used to bump into him and Mike Summerbee occasionally.
Carlos Tevez on the train on the way back from a London game, I was in First class and had fallen asleep and woke up to see Carlos sitting opposite me........ closed my eyes again as I thought I was dreaming..... he had come down to speak to his relatives/friends who were sitting across from me. I got a photo of him and loaned him my newspaper!! He knew more English than he let on to the press!!
Paul Lake is one of my favourites, we had him down to talk to us at the Eccles Supporters Club and he was a real gentleman and an excellent speaker. One of my favourite photos of me is with Lakey and the trophies!!!
And of course there is the never to be forgotten experience of presenting Joe Hart with player of the month at Carrington when I saw quite a few of the players and was introduced to........ VINCENT KOMPANY......... and was totally tongue tied!! But Joe was lovely, a brilliant young man.
And, although he is not a player, I met Gary James at the Radio Manchester studios, another gentleman. (not brown nosing there Gary, just telling the truth).
Oh and I once had a conversation with Paul Dickov at Manchester Airport, but as I greeted him I had thought he was an acquaintance I knew from my teaching days and it was only when he responded to my 'hullo, how are you' that I realised he was actually Paul Dickov and I was apologising at the same time as saying 'oh my goodness, I've just realised that you are Paul Dickov' and as I was wearing a jacket with the City badge he just laughed and chatted for a couple of minutes to me!! Duh!!
