we are crying out for a midfield link to our attack and proper midfield defensive cover. the defence had so mud work to do ( no help). we desperately need winks, maddison, foden etc to come through into this england team

Only teams we beat in 90 mins were Tunisia, Panama and Colombia without their best player.

Only Iran create fewer chance in open play per match than us.

It’s really not that impressive. I think only our nation could possibly get excited about such a tournament from their national team.

They’re likeable again

Genuine question, what makes them likeable?

I can see why a team of Ferdinand, Rooney, Beckham et al was despised, but what makes a team of Spuds, Dippers and Rags suddenly more likeable?

My personal stance has always been that I spend 9 months a year hating other teams' players, so I cannot turn it on when they suddenly wear a white shirt - so interested to know what makes this team likeable?

I love the WC, a month of pure football, but as long as City's players do well and stay fit, I couldn't give a toss who wins.

you dont need world class players to do well or win the world cup. weve had great teams in the past that got us nowhere. id rather have a team then a bunch of individuals. also you could argue we do actually have some top class players - kane, stones, pickford....

i think you are in a minority there. most people can and do support england,. it doesnt matter who they play for. I've never seen the level of support for england in my lifetime this tournament. i think they are likable because they arent a bunch twats who are focused on themselves like past engladn players.

I still think it’s been a terrific tournament for England. Belief and hope restored but I think in the last two games we showed that lack of class that we need to actually win the tournament. Some young players coming through will hopefully add to this team.

Southgate has prepared the team really well but ultimately the players weren’t good enough. Been such an enjoyable summer though.
