I dont rate Southgate one bit but this idea that the current England squad is full of special players is wide of the mark

Kane, Foden, Bellingham and Stones are the only England players I'd consider excellent players in terms of ability. They don't know how to use Foden though.

Rice is good but I wouldn't put him in that bracket, same with the current version of Walker. Saka too. Fine players but not outstanding.

Most of the others just sit somewhere between pretty decent and shite.

People would have you believe we have the best players in Europe in every position. Far from it.

U can't win big international games if you have players on the pitch unable to make simple passes and keep the ball. England desperately need a number 6. Rice is an 8 he's an emergency 6 but so much better playing at 8 he's not a player to keep the ball moving dictate play or be a deep lying playmaker. You can't have players like Connor Gallagher in your team how many times did he just kick the ball out of play last night? He ran around like a headless chicken and brazil just played around him. I'm all for pressing but it has to be done in the right times and zones. Chilwell is also woeful in possession and defending same as Maguire. So as much as people say this is the best England team/squad in 50 years they are still miles off being a great international team. And don't even get me on to the clown picking the team and tactics!!! The quicker he rocks up at the old toilet the better hopefully before the euros.

We've had better squads overall in the past, but this is the first generation of younger players trained with better technical ability in mind, Southgate a school of coaching that does not use them properly.

The palyers you mention if used right will mean you can have a mcguire or rice doing the bog standard stuff and not having to be world beaters or greatest ever.

You mould your team around the best players, Pep does it by makimg our second choice adapt to his style and pisscan did it for years where a lot of his teams were half good player along side bang average donkeys, even klopp does it.

Southgare is like a pochetino, can give him a good squad but ultimately he is useless in making them great.

Agree watching international football is getting more like watching conference league level. Piss poor standard.

The only players from that England squad that would get into the City squad already play for City.

The pl is great because we can take players from all over the world so the standard is high. Just imagine the standard of the pl with just English players lol

It’s funny because if that’s the case why does Southgate get so much shit ? If he’s pool of players are average/bad then how is he taking them to semi finals/finals and has one of the highest % wins of all time for England.

I’d say we have a very good pool of players and a few world class ones, we should be amongst the favourites to win tournaments but there’s no guarantees ever - especially one major tournament only every 2-4 years.

As for the ‘entertainment’ angle, international football just will never beat PL level - so people should just lower their expectations on that front. Plus it’s also subjective.

Countries with far lesser players have won tournaments, so it's about maximising what you have
