It does seem somewhat obvious. He will have his reasons though.I don’t get it, Phil can clearly play as a 10, the only man in the world that doesn’t think so is Gareth Southgate
To me it’s just the obvious choice, stick Rice as your holding midfielder. Let Bellingham do box to box stuff, so he can help out rice too and then put Phil just ahead of them as your creative man that plays between lines. I believe Kane wouldn’t need to drop so deep then and we would creative chances for him.
Then you can choose 2 between Saka, Rashford, Sterling and Grealish, depending on the game. that way you’ll get your technically best player on the pitch which is Phil Foden, you get rid of a Mount who does absolutely nothing and you have four different options for the wings that are all pretty good at different things, depending on the opponent.
Southgate is just give him self a headache when he could just put Foden in at number 10 position and it would probably simplify a lot of things.
He loses the ball multiple times a game has no control puts his head down and shoots-sometimes they go in more often than not they don’t. No way is he a better option than Foden. Christ even Southgate realises this!To be fair, there's probably a lot of people from all over Blighty (not just utd fans) that'll be disappointed if Rashford has been left out. He's looked more dangerous than "one of our own" so far in the tournament.

I dont disagree with thatHe's a good option against tired legs for the 2nd half. His goals mean he deserves to be the first go to sub if we need goals.
He is neither in the form of his life nor crap but if the plan is to control the game I can see why he might be on the bench.
