All the slagging off of England reminds me of Bono from U2...says in Ireland (England), you walk past the big house on the hill and wave your fist saying “that fucker!” while in America you walk past the same house on a hill in the States and say, “One day, that’ll be me!”
The mentality is very, very different and it is almost a defense mechanism that Brits badmouth Britain and England in particular, at every opportunity.
Southgate is trying to do something that should have been happening for decades....build a young England team to compete in tournaments for the long haul. Another game, albeit a friendly, coming up, so an opportunity to give more players a run out and see what their standard is at this level. It’s all about Euro 2020, WC 2022, etc... and building something sustainable now the “greatest generation” that never won a damned thing is dead and buried from the set up.
Stones MOTM all day long, and he should be the Captain. England were robbed at the end, but Rashford should have ensured that wasn’t needed. Quite a few anonymous performances, but that was a well heeled Spain team that knew how to move through the gears. Even so, their goal scoring chances were very limited...they’re just good enough to convert chances when they arise.
Onepwards and upwards for England, and I’m glad to watch them, cheer for them and hope they can do better as these younger players get some game time together.
