England have a squad of players from all the top sides in the top league in the world. If England were a Prem team they’d probably be the second best team in the league behind City (midfield of Bellingham and Rice is probably a bit weak).
Yet Southgate has this team playing like a struggling bottom of the league team who are favourites for relegation.
It’s awful to watch.
The tactics across numerous games have been very poor. Especially when it’s really mattered:
Going 1-0 up early doors against Croatia in the last WC semis and we tried to defend that lead like we weren’t worthy of it and got beat… going 2-1 in extra time against a poor Denmark in the Euros semis and he took Grealish off and tried to sit back and defend the lead like we weren’t worthy of it and we were getting mullered and were hanging on at the end… going 1-0 up early doors against an average Italy in the Euros final and we barely attacked again all game and tried to defend the lead like we weren’t worthy of it and Italy took over the game and went on to win on penalties (after Southgate bringing on two penalty takers on the final whistle whose legs were cold)… we got twatted a number of times by average teams in the Nations League causing us to get relegated.
Doesn’t pick the best player he has at his disposal because he hasn’t got the tactical and technical nouse of how to use him properly.
Midfielders are all too far away from each other too often so when one of them has the ball he has no passing option immediately. As soon as a player gets the ball he should have at least two passing options upon his first touch.
There’s a disconnect between the defence and attack. The full backs are too deep and the two holding players are too deep so when the attackers get the ball they’re isolated.
If Southgate announced he was leaving the England job after this WC, I don’t think any Prem team would seriously consider him for their manager’s job. Even down the bottom, when Leicester were struggling at the start of the season they would never have pondered approaching Southgate, Wolves and Southampton who’ve just changed their managers wouldn’t either, if West Ham or Everton get rid of Moyes or Lampard neither would approach Southgate.
We have the squad to win the WC but we don’t have the manager because he won’t get the team to go and win a big game.
