Enzo Maresca

I don’t understand what this is all about. 1st January 2026 Maresca left Chelsea. That’s fact. Sky Sports said, “Chelsea were considering making a change. There were issues with results and comments he made in the media, and also the fact he had been linked with other jobs.”

Chelsea said, “With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track.”

The Guardian said, “Sources have said that Maresca, who has agreed a severance package, attempted to use interest from Juventus and City as leverage for a new deal. His contract was due to expire in June 2029. Chelsea were unimpressed with the request and did not start talks.”

So reports at the time imply Maresca left by mutual consent. The connection to City in January 2026 implies Pep already planned to leave this summer. So the rumors seem to be true, but Maresca agreed a severance package at the time, so why is compensation being discussed?

We do not know if compensation is being discussed but it was reported that City made approaches to Maresca while he was Chelsea manager. CFC might regard this as tapping up?

Chelsea are basically trying it on
Don’t want to pay him severance and want us to pay compensation because they believe we basically tapped him up so he engineered his departure

Both of those are irrelevant to him becoming our manager though.

If we 'tapped him up', and they can demonstrate that, it is immaterial if he becomes our manager or someone else's. We still tapped him up.

If we didn't and it is all above board (he reportedly notified them of the approach in line with his contract), then that's that.

I'd find it more likely that whatevee compensation he was due hinged on him not finding another job within a certain timescale, and the wait may be for that to pass. Or maybe it suits us and our books to appoint him after a certain date, who knows.

Apparently Maresca was required in his contract to report any approaches to his bosses. He reported both City and Juventus in October and December 2025. He parted ways with Chelsea in January 2026 having agreed a severance package. This was amidst poor results and a dispute with his medical staff. We’ll just have to wait to see what happens but fact is he is presently out of work, and it seems unlikely Chelsea can prevent him seeking employment.

Except that ultimately the fanny merchants were proved right and City were always playing catch-up and never got the chance to get a few points ahead and test Arsenal
that is not really true, is it, mate.
we had it in our own hands at one stage and if we'd've won all our remaining games would've been champions.

regardless,
that's got nothing to do with this thread and people beginning to panic because they have no patience.

The fact is despite what the media reports say we don’t know the truth. To put another slant on it it could be argued by Chelsea that he engineered his exit so that he would be free to replace Pep
He might have already signed and things sorted with Chelsea but, as is normal for City they have an NDA and announce it when it’s suits them Just a thought he will also need a work permit as he’s not a UK citizen

Apparently, it is imminent.

I am somewhat surprised they haven't even put out a statement confirming his appointment at this point.

I don't know why compensation would hold us up from appointing him. I would assume that could be handled after the fact through arbitration if necessary. In addition, if I recall correctly, he stepped down and left his compensation on the table, not sure why we would owe Chelsea anything.
