I’m sorry I don’t really understand your point. Where have I ever suggested the style of play is not for me? And why do you think the entertainment level, based on this style, is rigid. It’s not, that has been played out in front of our eyes for the past 10 years.
I don’t disagree we have an overall ‘style’ of playing which runs through the club, We can argue, it’s positional, possession based or any other description currently in vogue but it’s a style set by Txixi etc, learnt at Barcelona based on the teachings of Johann Cruyff and continued by his number one pupil Pep Guardia and has produced some of the most thrilling football of all time.
We have seen examples of this with the great Cruyff, Pep sides at Barca and throughout Pep’s reign, with particular reference to the 2017/18, 2018/29, 2022/23 where our style allowed us to play arguably the best football in Europe. There is little comparison in ‘continuity of style’, from an entertainment perspective. with Maresca’s Leicester or Chelsea side because even though it might follow the overriding philosophy his style of football and management is to adopt a cautious, negative adaption of this philosophy.
Additionally we have seen, based on City’s principle of football, overlapping fullbacks (Mendy and Walker), inverted full backs (Delph, Zinchenko, Cancelo), four central defenders (2022/23), two number 8s (Silva and De Bruyne), a number 10 behind the striker (Foden 2023/24) a false 9 (Gundogan 2020/21), an out and out striker (Haaland 2023-), out and out wingers (same and sterling) inverted wide players (Grealish and Foden/Bernardo/Savinho), highlighting the amount of variation based upon the overriding philosophy. Additionally, even a club like Barca, much more steeped in a style of play within the club structure, have brought in a manager like Hansi Flick which has evolved the style of play within the parameters of the overall philosophy. It’s not a rigid structure, or has to be, that your suggesting.
As I wrote above I hope he has evolved or the football could be a proper bore fest.
