Eric Garcia to Barcelona

All of which disseminate from the board - a board that puts in sporting leadership to guide & support the team, including the cantera

There's no Neymar to partner Leo and I remarked about this in the run up to the Bayern QF, 3 years and several hundred million wasted and Messi is more isolated

The rumours are that Leo insists on not just calling elections early but for Bartomeu resigning - purportedly elections are being advanced (March being speculated) but no sign of Barto resigning just yet. My gut says only way Messi remains is if there is a leadership shift away from that of Bartomeu & Rosell (Who is speculated to run again) else he will leave

True but do you think he has the energy or time to wait for that to happen? For Barca to get a team challenging in the final again?

I assume the players will have watched that last night with eric there, and you can guarantee they will have been giving him banter for it.
They talk about this stuff informally im sure.

If he goes, his career will seriously be stunted. No chance they rely on a 20 year old to rebuild their defence on. If they do, hes not good enough anyway.

If he doesn’t go, shows a serious mental weakness that he doesn’t want to go into a challenging environment.

Messi is going nowhere. He can't move because of the financial arrangements imo. It's all just noise about him ever. He is trapped. Covid means nobody could get near his cash demands.

So basically, if he goes, hes fucked, and if he stays, hes fucked?

Really? Do you really think it is That simple?

What do you think the new board will do that the previous hasn't, and what is it this lot got so wrong?

It's never down to one thing/failure but a collection over a decade - from the erosion of the very foundation of the club in terms of youth development & the cantera to sporting philosophy with coaching selections & player recruitment. It's been aimless and geared at galactico signings rather than a sporting project, to play a corporate shell game of moving assets around rather than building something sustainable. It is simple to see, complicated to course correct without wholesale changes at the board level. The board determines the choices: La Masia, coaches, recruitment & outlook to avert scenarios like the one they currently are in. I have only posted about this since even before Rosell & Bartomeu took office. I knew what to expect from corporate clowns who have never ran a club successfully

Group Godo rubberstamping their failures has helped the cancerous board consolidate their power despite all evidence underscoring the need to resign. This is the entorno that Guardiola has previously spoken about. Now in the aftermath, we'll see if cooler heads prevail & a badly needed course correction happens or they will double down with Rosell. Up to the socis now, much like in Trump land - vote the cancer out or succumb to sinking further into the abyss

Should he leave, there will be a long queue for his services

Maybe not as long as you think

Who could afford him and his wages realistically for starters?

How old is he now -33? how many years as he got left?

Messi goes anywhere he automatically becomes the biggest and highest paid professional at that club - how many clubs could handle that pressure and how many dressing rooms and managers could?

For instance (and Im not saying that Messi would do this at all) - but if he said publically and clearly - I want out and i want to go to Man City - do you think Pep and Txixi would buy him? I think they would think about it certainly BUT there would be questions - esp for Pep - he has been accused and his achievement have been downplayed previously with people (wrongly) saying that he only won the champs league cause he had Messi - now even Pep has an ego and he might want to show that he can do it without Messi.....then there is the wages situation...Messi comes in and he would destroy our pay structure and suddenly you have the like of KDB, Sterling wanting more money (not to be paid the same but to want to be paid closer to what Messi is getting - and that filers down the line as well to even the likes of Foden)

Dont get me wrong, in the argument about who is the best player in the world Messi or Ronaldo Id take Messi in a heartbeat every single time and without the need for a second thought but there are a lot of complications to buying the very best player the world has ever seen.
I know people say that players like Messi pay for themselves but over a short shelf life of 2-3 seasons would he?

As for Barca - you are in big trouble - that performance last night stank of players downing tools - something is very wrong. You just dont have the quality all over the pitch that you used to and getting Eric Garcia aint going to solve your defensive issues by a long way. You will always compete for the title as a 50% Barca side will still outplay most of the other teams in your league BUT competing is not enough for your club - you are way of the champs league at present - Bayern were a class above you last night as well and people just saying that you were poor (you were) are only seeing part of the picture - the other part being the absolutely gulf in class between you and Bayern last night and addressing that gulf is going to be very difficult. As a club you are clearly financially fucked and in huge debt - howdo you get out of that and rebuild with quality?

Easy to write Barca off but remember 12 months ago and people were doing the same with Bayern after Robben and Ribery left. These sides are pre-eminent in their league and have fantastic young players and access to the best players in their league and South America. I think it has been obvious for some time that Barcelona were at the end of their cycle and need to rebuild.

You should consider though that this game was high risk by Bayern. Bayern were never going to park the bus as most teams do against Barca or Real Madrid. Instead they moved their team forwards and played in the Barca half. Early on Barca managed to play through them and counter-attack successfully but missed their chances. Had they taken them it could have been different. They went down early in a crazy game and were left chasing the game so conceded more.

Agree with that game summary, but too many Barça players don’t fancy working hard off the ball when the going is against them. Bayern also targeted de Jong, who looked like a young boy against men, and they also looked as if they could have gone up a gear at any point. Barcelona have players that are on huge wages but whose powers have waned whereas Bayern already had most of that team on the books when Ribery and Robben left. As such, it wasn’t necessary for them to rebuild, simply add cleverly with loans, Perisic and Coutinho; indeed, their main summer signings were injured or on the bench. But you’re right, Barcelona need a rebuild. Won’t be built in a season, however.

in an ideal world you build gradually and continuously. You don’t normally get a crop of kids bursting through together, nor can you mop up dozens of top players overnight, let alone assimilate them. That appears to be Barça’s current problem plus, of course, their Messi get-out-of-jail card now has a limited shelf life.

Agree mostly on the game. Bayern looked vulnerable early on. However, their lethal attacks soon put them in command, after which Barça lost their spirit and folded. It could have gone a different way...but didn’t!

Messi is the best, ever. His story is not over. You’re fooling only yourself if you think there wouldn’t be a long line of suitors

He is the best ever but he comes with very considerable risk and financial investment and realistically there arent many teams who can afford even his wages

I wonder if he would just retire instead?

In the current environment the only reason there will be a long line of suitors is if they are practising social distancing of 5o metres

All true.

But as i pointed out on the other thread, the fans and the entitled expectation they have play as much of a part.

The board sack managers within 6 months, get into debt to pay for world class players or promising young talents, ship out youth players they can recoup cash on etc etc, to get instant results, or if they dont see a return straight away, because they have to please.

And that pressure isn't going away, when the new lot take over. Hence the original by the other poster, point you said had no logic, same problems and difficulties will still exist. I doubt they will have the time needed to truly tackle them. Will always have to maibtain a level of success and that comes at a cost.
