Ta.....I was thinking that when a release clause is triggered, the players current contract would be terminated at midnight 30th June.

The summer transfer window opens on 10th June - so if we trigger the clause ahead of the window, that’s the earliest he could officially become a City player.

Dortmund hold his registration til then, whatever happens.

His contract doesn’t end with Dortmund until 30th June 2024, so this isn’t like a free transfer situation where his registration transfers over at the expiry of his contract at the end of June.

We’re agreeing a transfer with Dortmund, which can be agreed at any time, and his registration can transfer over to us as soon as the Transfer window opens. Like with Torres in January, where Barcelona negotiated the deal with us in December to transfer over on 1st Jan.

His deal with Dortmund has a release clause for this summer, which means as soon as it’s triggered, they have to put the offer to the player - and if he accepts, they have to agree at the set price.

That’s the theory. The reality is a club will only trigger the clause once they’ve already agreed a deal with the player.

Where the ambiguity comes in is when the deadline for the clause to be triggered kicks in. Is it at the end of the summer window, or the end of June - or the end of April, as dons are saying.

I don’t think anyone knows for sure.
Agree, my doubts are about April because to me it would make no sense for Dortmund to agree a clause in his contract kicking in before their season ends.

I’d love for City to be able to sign Reyna as well as Haaland the kids a huge talent and a massive City fan but I’m guessing we might stay away due to his injury issues. shame really

It would seem a strange one, as it would be deliberately disruptive to the end of their season - which doesn’t make a lot of sense.

I can see a deadline early in the window, so they can ensure they get the funds in with as much time as possible to spend - but April seems unlikely.

You don’t appear to want any of our kids to make the step up. Personally I am excited to see McAtee develop next season. Both him and Reyna are the same age.

On the timelines of how it would work…
  • City can agree personal terms with Haaland at any time. In theory, that could’ve been the day after he moved to Dortmund.
  • Once terms are agreed, a pre-contract can be signed. The pre-contract will have a ‘valid from’ date attached and becomes legally binding (subject to a range of terms - in this case, presumably payment of release clause from current contract, passing a medical, etc.)
  • City then need to issue formal notice of intent to pay the release clause to BVB on said date. Funds go to UEFA for escrow.
  • When the date is reached… BVB receive funds from UEFA, Haaland is released from his existing contract and is on the City payroll.
  • When the transfer window opens, he registers with City. These two dates (contract start and registration) are probably the same.
In theory, City / Dortmund / Haaland could announce these at any stage. Like the rags did last summer (we’ve reached a provisional agreement with Varane, Sancho).

Even if Little Alf has signed his pre-contract already, City could still be working out the terms of payment with Dortmund. It’s not necessarily as straightforward as “there’s no negotiating to do” per the twitter hot takes. The club might well have given Dortmund a choice of cash up front or more money stretched over a longer period.

For announcement, anyone’s guess. There could be a written agreement between all parties for when this’ll be, though I’m sure Dortmund will have no qualms with leaking things to piss on our chips. I suspect we’ll get dribs and drabs from the German end once we’ve issued notice of payment.

Not at all I think McAtee is a tremendous talent and I'd love for him to get more minutes.

The Reyna thing is his story came up on my time line about his brother and the Aguero goal. It just got me thinking I'd love for him to play here.

while i 100% believe your info....you of all people should know how things can quickly change.....

I guess the difference here to where we have been burnt before by transfers not happening however is that there really is only one real competitor and thats Madrid.....and they will prob get Mbappe and there are the other factors as well like his old mans links to us as well at play

Just hope what you know stays the way it is till the transfer window opens.

Absolutely, but my information on this occasion wasn't verbal but visual.
