Erling Haaland

Why won't we get him? We're becoming one of the strongest teams in Europe, the big teams (bar Munich) are either struggling financially or for results. Barca won't, Madrid probably want Mbappe, PSG ain't a challenge to the point France's biggest star wants to leave at 22, Dortmund would never sell directly to Munich if there are other offers, United are still a joke, Liverpool won't spend 20mil on a CB to ensure top 4, Juventus have spent loads on Ronaldo etc.

If we want him, we're in the best position.

I don’t disagree that we would be attractive to Haaland i just don’t see city paying the fee that would tempt Dortmund to sell a year before his 65m release clause, on top of the wages Raiola would demand for him and also the big lump sum Raiola would demand for himself. We always back away when agents ask for big fees. Really hope I’m wrong but when was the last time we signed a ready made superstar that every big club would want? As I’ve said previously, KDB and Aguero were already really good but they became world class at City.

My own view is we always miss out on these kind of players, for various reasons.
The rags would outbid us and his agent is all about the money. I also wouldn’t rule out Chelsea offering Havertz and/ or Werner as part of a swap if they continue to struggle.

I feel like I myself have addressed all the points you brought up in this post multiple times already (not to mention other members as well) so at some point I just have to throw my hands in the air and say Enough is enough lol. How many times can you say that a once in a lifetime deal means going the distance in a way we haven’t done before — when it’s so obviously worth it from sporting AND marketing perspectives? Anyway...

I do totally understand why some people defensively already write this deal off as to not get frustrated if it doesn’t happen in the end. The investment can hurt, I know. It can be made even worse if he ends up going to a rival. So being able to say “I never believed it” or “never wanted him anyway” is a good coping mechanism. Still, I chose to believe and hope.

Absolutely agree with you, but if City give Raiola say £15-20m then they’re setting a precedent to agents and they’ve previously made it very clear they won’t do it. Would they go against that principle for a player who is clearly a generational talent? I hope so, but look at the problems Raiola causes for United with Pogba constantly going to the press. I see us enquiring but I just don’t see us giving in to the ludicrous demands Raiola will have for a player like this.

£60 mil for Rodri was hardly small change. Would we pay £80ish mil (plus wages & sign-on fee) for the frontrunner for best striker in the world, when quality strikers are at an all-time low? I hope so. We can also waive the sell-on clause for Sancho which wouldn't cost anything.

His marketability is insane. He's going to end up with about 80 CL goals at this rate, he's one of the 2 best attacking prospects in the World, he's tailor-made for the Prem and he's got that weird Ronaldo almost robot-like mentality.

If we want to finally win the CL, he's what we need, and he's worth the gamble. Pogba kicks off because a) that's his shitty personality b) United are shit.

I think one of the biggest mistakes people constantly make in this thread is treat Raiola like a uniquely awful agent. The truth is, there is nothing unique about him. You could find plenty other agents who share the same flaws he does. That is the football world. I don’t see a circumstance in which the club has decided “this player is the best option for us, we can afford it, but we don’t like his agent”. Everyone is a grown up. Truths in football only last 24 hours, that’s a saying where I come from. The kind of fee we’re talking about for this transaction would only apply in major transfers, and as we all know we’re rarely involved in those. So I guess in ten years or more we’d pay another agent fee like this again. Not an issue in terms of precedent

I think the Sancho clause could really go in our favour. If he goes for £90-100m like is rumoured then that could mean Dortmund pocketing an extra £10-20m. Whether £80m would be enough though considering how high the Sancho fee is likely to be I'm not sure. Surely Haaland would cost any buyer more than what Sancho is sold for?

Not if they risk losing him for 60ish mil a year later. We also have players like Braaf we could use as a makeweight, who they’d make a healthy profit on.
