Erling Haaland

Ignoring all of my other points...

Please point out a single instance under current ownership where we have ever signed the most expensive player at any position.

We've never done this.

We might - I suppose do so for Haaland - provided that he meets with Pep and our management and states that he wants to play for us as his primary objective.

But signing Haaland for a world-record transfer fee... I really doubt that this is going to occur.
I'm convinced that a world-record transfer fee won't be needed if that helps.

If Haaland wants to play for us as his primary goal - then yes.

If Haaland wishes simply to get as much money as he can - for a top side - then he will not be in our squad next season.

Me? I'm very skeptical that we sign Haaland - though I'd love to be wrong.

Why do you keep ignoring my point that we were willing to pay for Mbappe the same number PSG payed when we saw his potential? That would have gone way beyond our “current record”. Strikers are by far the most expensive position. To think we are looking for one to cost the same as Rodri is ridiculous. When we got Kevin, he had won POTY at Bundesliga. We negotiate in positions that are fluid. Dias, Koulibaly, Kounde... all similar and all could do the job, we needed to work out a deal with Nico, it wasn’t “a bargain”. And Dias was already a starting player in the Portuguese national team and had been linked with other major clubs.

You are also ignoring that the reason Haaland’s fee is high is because the clubs all know he is this decade’s star with Mbappe and will bring to the club he goes to insane commercial returns. Take PSG and what they paid for Neymar. It was a crazy amount of money, but it has proven more than worth it. Their commercial standing globally and the cash flow drastically change. An investment in a player like this isn’t just for the team; it’s a commercial play. That is why it’s ridiculous to compare this to paying the most for a CB. Paying more for Koulibaly than we paid for Dias wouldn’t have brought money to the club like Haaland would

“ We might - I suppose do so for Haaland - provided that he meets with Pep and our management and states that he wants to play for us as his primary objective. ”

And what kind of naive worldview is this? Lol. Are you trolling us?

Walker was a record for a full back
Mendy then broke that record 10 days later

Both signed (with mixed success) because Pep identified out full backs as our biggest weakness.

What is our current biggest weakness? Striker. We arent playing one.

It wont be a world record. The record is £200m neymar. This is more likely around £100m-£120m

I hope you're correct. But based on the numerous points I've previously posted - which I won't repeat here - I think it's much less that 10-to-1 against that Halaand or MBappe is in our side next season.

The only way that either player is in our side - is that they express to Pep that their primary desire is to play in Pep's side - in which case we could possibly make something happen.

Currently, we don't even play with a striker. And we're the number one side in world football.

Yes the bad points which have been replied to specifically already

“ The only way that either player is in our side - is that they express to Pep that their primary desire is to play in Pep's side - in which case we could possibly make something happen.”

You must be one of those who think we don’t get into negotiations in which other clubs are involved, which is factually incorrect. This isn’t a saints’ game.

“ Currently, we don't even play with a striker. And we're the number one side in world football.”

This has been discussed at least a hundred times in the thread already. Knowing a little bit about Pep would have prevented you from making this kind of implication

No, I was saying that if we play our possession game with a high press and high line then Haaland would leave a hole in it. Thus we’d need to alter our play to accommodate him.

My further thought was that we had a big fast powerful lump like Haaland (Yaya) and it worked with him because he played at the back of midfield and used his size and speed to hold up play and distribute from midfield, to charge forward on the counter and to push up for set pieces. Like Haaland, he was too big a unit to play in a high press but we still got the most out of his talents without relinquishing our press.
I said that I could image that Haaland would fit well into that role but that he’d want to play striker.

I actually don’t think we should / will get him for a variety of reasons (his agent, his agents bung demand, his fathers bung demand, his massive fee, his uber-massive wage demands causing upset in the ranks, the fact that we’d need to rebuild around ‘him’ etc.).

I also recognise that there’s a frantic clamour to buy the “new superstar” every year and we tend to ignore the pantomime dames and instead buy players who fit well into our system.
I’m happy with where that’s taken us so far but if we do decide to throw a fortune at getting a square peg for our round hole then I’ll be cool with it because I‘ll trust that Pep has a plan to integrate him.
I’d love to see it done but currently struggle with the concept.

so the best manager ever wouldn't get the best out of Haaland?

Except none of Fernando, Mangala nor Bony signed in the last 5 years... facts hey?
Exactly, in the early days we know there was a bit of a scatter gun approach while trying to raise the quality of the squad. The last 5 years have seen us have a much more focused approach that has reaped the rewards

Great points - all. Save that you've ignored every single thing I've said.

0/10.

The only way we'll sign Haaland is if Haaland is 100% committed to joining us and has stated so to Pep.

Even then, we're up against it with UEFA, which further complicates matters.

Haaland/Mbappe/Neymar will not be in our side next year - move on.
