Funny how there are fans who mock Hughes signings now. Part one of the project was to get the initial players in to get us to the next level. That was achieved. None of us moaned when we bought them. Barry, De Jong, Kompany, Tevez. Yeh crap signings

Exactly right. I'd say as far costing us results, Savic was the poorest buy in some years. He was never ready for the Premier League at such a high level.
Which points have we dropped in the league due to Savic?

Such is my point... Hughes signing RSC was a hit to the wage bill but it certainly never costed us the kinds of points Savic did. If we are to hold Hughes accountable for RSC then we must hold Roberto accountable for buying Savic and not giving him the proper venue to develop his talents?

OK. Tell me how many points Stefan Savic cost City last season? I would suggest it is somewhere between 0 and 2.

He was involved in 11 League matches (5 starts and 6 sub appearances). City won ten of those matches and lost the other (away to Swansea). You could blame Savic for misplacing a pass in the Swansea half but others were culpable.
Ah I see you have already made the point I was looking to make. Well played and you just showed alky's ignorance.

He did his best to cost us points but we were so good, even Savic struggled to fuck us up completely. He did manage to narrow down our cup options & prove to everybody that we were actually vulnerable due to his appalling debut v QPR. Until that moment, everyone thought we were invincible. One look at Savic changed that.

In fairness to Hughes(and I never thought I would start a reply with those words!)his spending happened at a time when the project was just starting, there was clearly much more "risk" in his signings because top draw players without issues aren't going to join a project.
No there is no excuse for a lot of Hughes signings. Bridge, Kolo Toure, Jo and Santa Cruz were very expensive, very poor signings. Cruz had serious knee injuries and Kolo and Bridge had come purely for the money. To be fair to Kolo when Yaya returned it revitalised him and put more effort it. Jo just was not very good and either was Ben Haim.

Then signing Lescott for 22 million was awful busines. Bellamy and Adebayor were trouble makers, but he can control Bellamy and was not a decent deal for him. Adebayor had world class potential, but seems to have a terrible attitude.
To be fair to Hughes I think that Tevez and Robinho were board signings.

Overall Hughes did terrible with his signings and had no idea of the style he wanted to play and the formation he wanted to fit them in. Board signings like Robinho did not help matters.

- Bridge and Kolo were exactly what we needed at the time.
- Jo was hardly anything to do with Hughes
- You fail to mention Zab and Kompany.

The only daft thing going on was the length and size of the contracts going on. But how else were we supposed to attract the players to boost us?

Bridge and Kolo were terrible, terrible signings. Chelsea and Arsenal fans were all laughing how they managed to get rid of them for so much. Bridge had been past it for a long time and was shocking defensively. Kolo Toure had lost all motivation.

Zabaleta was a good signing and Kompany was an unbelievable signing. However, he planned to play Kompany in midfield and before Hughes left, Kompany was kind of stuck in limbo and I think a was not making the team.

are you quite sure you are a crystal palace fan?
Yes of course. Who else would I support? We are rock bottom have just gone out of the cup. Made a few desperate signings today on the free, but hopefully Blake will be decent. Good to see Williams back. I have a feeling he will play top 8 in the Premiership. However, we have just lost 9 or so players including a lot of our best. Speroni, who for several years was the best keeper in the Championship is starting to age a bit. We had to sell for financial reasons and I understand that. Honestly would just love for the season to end with us staying up. Zaha is almost certainly off, but I hope he has a bit of loyalty and stays till the end of the season. I've been discussing our depressing season with many Palace fans. Have yet to get to see a match, but going down to the Wednesday game on Saturday.
