Etihad Atmosphere - 2022/23

Dave, I've got to say that this line is so bizarre. If you genuinely think the (very) few of us that try and actually do something (rather than just posting on a forum) are the problem then you need to give your head a wobble.
I’m not having a go. I know you are trying and I’ve contributed to you financially before. But the first five minutes of a game usually sets the tone for the “floating” singers in the stadium and if you’re purposefully clapping out “empty seats at home” and “you thought you’d win the league at Sunderland” and “Edin Dzeko” from the first minute, like in the last home game when it was those three in that order in the first two minutes of the game, you are killing the proper atmosphere, not creating it.

People around the other blocks don’t join in, people who would sing think “nobody is singing around me” and then the singing becomes mainly confined to 400 people behind the goal. It becomes self defeating.

When the big games are on the proper songs start elsewhere from behind the goal for that reason.

Hope it's a good atmosphere tonight. About 150 Sevilla fans so that won't help, but the right songs will. I'm sure there will be a few empty seats considering we're through and Haaland is out. Will be a good steer as to where our support is and how much of an impact Haaland has made. A dead rubber where he's not involved - if we're still over 50,000 we know it's time to expand.

It will be a full house. It’s been sold out for ages. Mine will be empty though, unless anyone wants it for nowt. I’m on holiday.

Well said DD, leave the empty seats and edin dzeko (bizarre that we still sing that) in the past or at least leave them in the concourse bar and pubs.

Maybe. I think movements like theirs depend on a bit of luck. If they are seen as the spearhead to the new atmosphere (rather than the football), their wider fanbase will buy into it more. Sometimes it just takes a bit of leadership to get the rest of the stadium more involved.

The same happened at Palace where the Holmesdale Fanatics benefited from a promotion push (as well as having thousands of empty seats so they could congregate more easily).

I agree on those two points
Organisational leaders; problem there is seems to be a resistance to change.
I did think that we have had a promotional push, that hasn't succeeded.

I thought there has been a considerable improvement this Season, apart from Brighton.
I had to move seats to c Bell 3rd tier. The view was OK, big change from East 1.
Unfortunately the noise from the South stand was all Brighton. I don't know the answer.
No critiscm of you or those trying to do something, but until we have more folk wanting to be part of a bigger "thing" it won't work.

Was in SS1 for Dortmund, and have to say there seems like a real disconnect between the fans in SS1 and the rest of the ground. It's easy to think the Atmosphere is amazing when you're amongst the 400 people singing about Edin Dzeko, however the rest of the ground is silent.

When Bellingham scored there was a bit of a scuffle between the two sets of fans and in that tense moment it just felt like the whole stadium was waiting for the south stand to lead everyone in to a chorus of Bluemoon or We're not really here. But what do I here from the back of the stand... "We've been to Rotterdam and Monaco..." Completely killed the stadium.

I think these clap along songs do have a place as the whole ground isn't going to be singing for 90 minutes every game, but as Dave mentions the first 5 minutes and at any tense point of the game we should be reverting to the Basics.

I agree with you. But it’s rich from fans who make no effort in the quiet parts of the ground to point their finger at SSL1.

The atmosphere in SSL1 is brilliant. So it’s not just our fault that 90% of the stadium is quiet.

We want to improve it everywhere and will continue trying to do that. But I think it’s unfair to blame the ones making a racket!

In Dortmund last week, 80% of the game was just their ultra section singing which is only a few thousand in the middle of the yellow wall. Probably singing their equivalent of Empty seats at home.

However at the key points in the game like the start and after Mahrez missed the penalty, they sang their club anthems and the whole stadium joined in.

I'm absolutely not one of these who will roll their eyes whenever the Edin Dzeko song is sang, I actually quite like it, however there really is a time and a place

I’m not sure I agree with you on the first point. It’s not always, but when ss3 sing lots of sections around the ground do join in. The south stand should be leading the singing in my opinion.

It’s all to do with song choice. 90% of the ground aren’t going to join in songs about Dzeko or empty seats. Ss3 sing we love you city or blue moon (classics) the rest of the ground follow

Ss1 seems to be on a different song sheet. It’s not a criticism, as most of the songs are great, just think not enough of the classics are sung
