Etihad atmosphere

Not great again at weekend.

You can have your flags, bananas, singing sections, ticker tape etc etc etc but nothing will fix the root cause of the problem. I admire those for trying to get something going, and this isn't a dig at them, they are doing a great job with a very difficult fanbase to motivate.

People will complain about ticket prices etc, but that affects people not going, not the ones that have gone to the game and still sit quiet. Not sure if it was a full house on Sunday but there were plenty there anyway.

The problem is the fans, it's as simple as that. The sense of entitlement, I hear it every home game. Boos at HT, FT (people can deny it as much as they want, but I can hear just fine). Some of the horrendous abuse players get for making a mistake, or not seeing the right pass, or making the wrong decision is disgusting.

It's not the whole fanbase, but large sections of it. I can't see it getting any better and it seems to be the price of success. Away games are much better but the abuse still the same when mistakes are made.

The only noise we seem to hear is the roars of "encouragement" when chasing a game. The fans expect us to win and the place is flat unless we are winning or trying to get a winner.

Then you leave the ground and overhear people's converstations "fucking disgrace" "pep doesn't know what the fuck he's doing" etc etc. All after 1-1 draws against a good Southampton side and an Everton side that defended better than I've ever seen at the Etihad and Maine Road. Before people question where I sit and blame a small section of idiots, I read the same things on here after the game. Don't even get me started on match day threads on here.

I await the usual "another fan slagging of the atmosphere" rhetoric but whilst the thread is still going with ideas of how to improve it, the topic is still relevant and the issue is still the same, and it won't be fixed by inflatable bananas. Don't ask me what my bright idea is to sort it out either, i've no idea.

I don't even think there is a fix, this is City's modern day fanbase whether we like it or not. There's more to supporting a team than singing bluemoon when 3-0 up.

Celtic run of the mill home league games would have a reasonable atmosphere at them these days. The crowd in the standing section generate this and chant the whole game.

It works both ways. A ground that's bouncing with atmosphere would lift the players a lot. Flat fans, flat team on many occasions.

Many fans of other clubs would give anything for what we have now. Time for a bit of positivity and buzz.

Agree that the atmosphere was flat but I don't think that the TV is 100% accurate in recording it. Microphones are set up differently, sound balanced altered etc.

Oh, and if you booed at half time, you're a dick.

While I agree the TV isn't the best source but it was noticed by the commentators on the radio and they aren't usually one for playing up to the Emptyhad - it was "eerily" quiet as Quinn said.

I think the problem is that there were understandably some nerves going in, and then the players were just so poor and disjointed. We lost possession every 3rd pass. Everythign was overhit or underhit - there was literally nothing to get the crowd to cheer for.

As soon as the players turned up in the second half, so did the crowd. I can't imagine Sky decided to completely alter the sound set up on the tv at half time either.

Genuine question, name me the grounds in the prem where the atmosphere is bouncing every game? Especially when the team are playing awful and getting beat.

Yes cos I remember those hot atmospheres at Maine road when we played our big rivals southampton. People forget there are some games where we have passionate rivalry, Liverpool clubs, rags, Leeds . Usually when the opposition bring a big following and there is a bit of history.

As for the post match discussions about that was crap or he did not play well etc. That's football. I can assure you pep and the players did not hear me and won't be affected by me and my dads post match discusssion about the game!

And before anyone says it's the 'new' fans it really isn't. Guys who sit near me in their 30's, 40's and 50's do not support the team until we are three up. They've been going for ever but are now fat, lazy, entitled , silent, crap fans. But they do enjoy a good 'boo'.

We weren't playing awful, but this is part of the problem. The barometer for judging performance has changed so much with expectations that sections of our home crowd have seemingly forgotten what awful, or similar, actually is. For context, this was awful: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/6185673.stm

We don't have a divine right to win every game, but the sense of desperation and expectation to do so reflects in the atmosphere.

I don't expect the place bouncing every game, and in answer to your question there isn't a ground that is. However, i'd suspect there aren't many that boo when top of the league after drawing, either. Maybe one or two obvious candidates - but do we want to be part of that group?
