Its funny but the kippax looks small in that picture, but from the front, and back, it always looked huge, all down to the roof I guess.

[I'm guessing that was a derby, judging from the away section looking packed ?]
With those fences it would have to be after Heysel (pitch invasion v Charlton was a week or so before) and before Hillsborough (I'm pretty sure the fences were down in time for the 5-1 in '89 but in any event that was a glorious day) which means it could only be one of two Derbies (assuming it is a Derby).

85/86 & 86/87.

Definitely not the 5-1 that was a much sunnier day (in every way) as suggested.

Wonder if the original cable net will create a slightly obstructed view in the higher seats.

It sits above and still supports the roof structure providing they have got the angles right there should be no sight line obstructions

You can see how the cable net is in relation to the new tier

One thing your pictures give some impression of now, is how much bigger (in surface area) the south stand roof will be once completed, compared with the current one, and with it angled down, it should benefit atmosphere greatly. I hope the club get the seating plan right, I think quite a few of the noisier ones will relocate into the third tier, right under the roof.
Completely agree with this cleavers.

Let's not forget the last stand we had with an angled-down roof:

2-1.jpg

That kept the sound in pretty well at times.

I wondered who hacked my computer and stole my photos!!!.....26th October 1986

Was that the 1-1 when McCarthy scored with a header? If so, I watched it on a little black and white telly at Uni as it was on ITV IIRC.

The fencing was definitely there for Charlton as we had to climb over it from the Kippax to get on the pitch.

I think the next Derby was the 5-1 and when I was back on the Kippax. Definitely no fences then as the fighting in the North Stand split over on to the pitch. Nasty Raggies with a row of seats near the bottom kicking off with women and children. Nothing changes. The only funny moment was Tony Coton tapping the ref of the shoulder in the Centre Circle about 4 mins in and pointing to the fighting in the goal. They has to go off for ten mins whilst it was sorted by the GMP. That seemed to stir us on whilst blowing the Rags' confidence. Hence, 5-1 ensued. It was great fun!

Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Threa

Seeing those photos has just made me think how much football has changed. I would say for at least 5 years of the 1990s I used to jump the turnstiles in the kippax - watch the first half from a policeman's tower at the back of the kippax. Then I would walk round to the Maine Stand via the Platt Lane.

If a Steward ever pulled me I just used to just say - can I go and say hello to my Grandad (I have never had a living Grandad!) and then frequently choose one of the best empty seats in the Maine Stand. I once climbed over a mini wall in the directors box and actually went in for half time sandwiches with the Directors.

It was vs Sheff United and we lost 3-2. Someone asked me who I was and I coolly said "Peter Swales Grandson"!

Can you imagine that happening now!!

Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Threa

Drove past the stadium yesterday the SS looks huge, this stadium is going to look awesome when complete, fit for champion league winners.

Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Threa

This thread is the best one on here, all positive and flys in the face if FFP and Platini who should hold his head in shame.

The old pics of the Kippax are brilliant I've spent years on that terracing sometimes ducking missiles, sometimes moving 25 yards in a goal celebration, sometimes crying etc.

The pics of the top tier of the South Stand look fantastic standing in level one below it I've not appreciated just how big it would be.

A big fhank you to our owner just think what the next 5 years will bring.

Fences were definitely there in that game, They spilt through a gate at the front

Ah, ok. I was in the North Stand with my young lad (his first derby) .....definitely a fence up as the rags had to climb over it to escape and were then escorted to the Platt Lane....

Not the City v Charlton game from 85, only the small pitch edge fence on the Kippax, <a class="postlink" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBgeg9yhknE" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBgeg9yhknE</a>
Also not the the derby for 86 as the North Stand fence as the for this game was the later bigger one <a class="postlink" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8Vra0gGVDI" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8Vra0gGVDI</a>

I was on the Kippax. It was an early kick off as I remember and so I may even have been sober! You must be right but I definitely remember that there was fighting in the goal mouth once the game had started which is why Cooper legged it up to half way. I was scrapping in town with Raggies for the next couple of weeks. LOL. They really hated that day.

It might looked packed in that picture, but it was empty that day.

Lowest derby crowd in 70-odd years if I recall. Crowd was 33,000 because of TV and some other restrictions.

No probs. :-)

I've got to say, it really is massive. :-? Most of you will see what I mean at the next home match.

It looks like a proper end, whereas before both ends where somewhat underwhelming. Walk to both ends of the Etihad and you will see the comparison and what I mean.

The height of the expanded South Stand will only increase with the addition of the air vents/grills and the roof itself. Compare the current height of the East Stand with the expanded South Stand, which still hasn't got the vents/grills and roof.

Photoshop isn't my strongest point.

Vent/grills and roof on the East Stand highlighted.

[bigimg]http://i.imgur.com/HZkkHlT.jpg[/bigimg]
I'm in the East Stand and can see both ends from my seat and I've always thought the two ends have looked unfinished. When you think they only hold 5800 in a 48000 stadium, that's pretty tiny. There are stadiums with half that capacity with larger ends than that.

Finally we're going to start to look like we have a proper stadium that looks finished at all stands (obviously, by the time both ends are finished).
