Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Threa

I love the developments that are happening at the club now, it's absolutely fantastic.

But seeing those old pictures of Maine Rd.

Just from a personal point of view, if I could put this team, in that stadium, as it was when the scoreboard end was still a standing area, or when the North Stand was first built before they put seats in (I think it was 67k capacity briefly then was it not ?).

67k with two stands all terracing, watching Aguero, Silva & Co.

That's my idea of a matchday experience. I would swap that, piss flowing bogs, Waggonwheels, pies that took the skin off your mouth, horseshit in the tunnels, for this stadium, in a heartbeat.

In fact I'd like to live there, in a tent. Just come out & watch City fucking demolish everybody, because this team would in that ground.

Barca would be shitting their pants already.

Ah, ok. I was in the North Stand with my young lad (his first derby) .....definitely a fence up as the rags had to climb over it to escape and were then escorted to the Platt Lane....

I was on the Kippax. It was an early kick off as I remember and so I may even have been sober! You must be right but I definitely remember that there was fighting in the goal mouth once the game had started which is why Cooper legged it up to half way. I was scrapping in town with Raggies for the next couple of weeks. LOL. They really hated that day.

I remember seeing a rag sat down around the back of the North Stand with a Utd pin badge on acting all cocky....Saw him again at half time with badge off and looking white as as a sheet, I just laughed at him....

Really was an iconic day....Best get back on topic now ;)

Loved Maine Road when we there (especially in the '70s before Swales and Lee got to work on it). Don't miss it all now. As far as I'm concerned we're winners at the Etihad and we were losers at Maine Road.

Great day, "Machins Marvel v fergies Wallet" - how times have changed. Police pushed us in the North Stand when we were in the bit between the main stand and the North Stand. Kicked off at the front just as they started escorting us across so watched Oldfield and Morley score while sat on the edge of the pitch agaist an advertising hordeing. Hinchcliffes header still one of our best breakaway goals

Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Threa

For Charlton, I remember it was like an iron garden fence, about four feet high, so you could vault to get your foot on top and then swing the other leg on top to jump over. IIRC, I to do this twice as we were chased off by the charging police horses the first time.

One thing your pictures give some impression of now, is how much bigger (in surface area) the south stand roof will be once completed, compared with the current one, and with it angled down, it should benefit atmosphere greatly. I hope the club get the seating plan right, I think quite a few of the noisier ones will relocate into the third tier, right under the roof.
Completely agree with this cleavers.

Let's not forget the last stand we had with an angled-down roof:

2-1.jpg

That kept the sound in pretty well at times.

Just a thought about the Kippax.

Were City the only major club to have their main singing\atmospheric section along the length of the pitch rather than behind the goal. i.e Trafford (Stretford End), Liverpool (The Kop), Newcastle (The Gallowgate end), Villa Park (The Holt End), Arsenal (The Clock End).

This in effect City probably had a bigger singing section than anyone else.
What was the capacity of the Kippax with standing only?

When Maine Road opened in 1923 - it was tagged "Wembley of the North" - Capacity around 80,000.
Maine Stand - 15,00 seats. - Kippax about 30,000. - Platt Lane 15,000 (including the curved section around to Main Stand. -Same for scoreboard end
15,000 - around 75,000 capacity. - BUT 84,569 vs. Stoke FA Cup 1934 went down in history.

30,000 for the Kippax (more than the Stretford End, Kop, Gallowgate, Clock End, Holt End etc.). That would be plenty for a singing section !

Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Threa

Question: does the stadium tour include a tour of the CFA as well yet?

Not being remotely interested in rugby, I never knew about Odsal. Just watched a Youtube clip from 54 when 102,000 , officially, were at the final replay. Huge place.

I wouldn't say the atmosphere went all along from memory looking at that picture the away fans had the first section on the right and the "hardcore" city were next to them along the dividing fence above a tunnel if I remember correctly ? Just trying to remember if I went to the opposite end at halftime ?
