A two lane road will have twice the capacity of a one lane road, this is obvious. Reducing it to one to accommodate buses has knock on to other roads, so yes just like Liverpool let's see the light and get rid of them. Bad driver habits contribute to traffic jams, leaving gaps in crawling traffic means the queue of traffic is longer than it should be, less cars get through on green than should do, junctions up to that road are also affected. I drove into Manchester last Wednesday and the Springsteen gig was on at the Etihad due to selfless drivers blocking junctions, a lane on Blackfriars was empty so yes bad drivers and bus lanes cause traffic jams. I can't comment on your illustration, but is this the same every day at that time? Or was it the consequence of an accident?
I was also pointing out that most buses are not full, yet there are following each other down the road

i always knew there would be 1 front bottom who would support this crazy idea of going down to one lane to help assist in the smoother faster flow of traffic, i guess we found him

If the buses aren't full how come Stagecoach make millions in profit each year ! As a City/County Greater Manchester needs a lot better public transport system, that includes better buses, trains and trams !

Transport uses huge amounts of energy. Cars and Transport take up 1/3 of the energy budget and there is a green agenda in government to move from oil towards gas (1/2 the CO2 emissions) and renewables. Only the moves and plans are done without a public discussion.

Cars are seen as an enemy to be restricted from the City centre. In a few days Oxford Rd closes in the daytime so that you wont be able to drive up Oxford Rd past the MRI any more. I am not a transport expert but to my eye, trams are not an ideal solution because they block cars and buses at junctions. So as the 300 passengers go by on the Tram for a couple of minutes, fleets of buses and cars are held up stationary on the road. And it takes so long to build the tram infrastructure blocking the City centre.

We are in the middle of the Tram infrastruture build, and the conversion of roads to bike, pedestrian and bus friendly routes. I hope in 12 months time that travel in and around Manchester is less of a problem. It should be really when you consider the amount of roads that are closed in manchester, but as the work completes, you find that they are permanently shut to cars eg St Peters Square.

Just thinking so all the money from concerts held at the ground will help fund the North stand expansion?

If so well done Mani hahahaha

You maybe right Marvin, but I still think we need a integrated transport system, as people have said, they seen's to be a problem stopped a underground system in Manchester. Maybe the answer is to go overhead, but what ever way it will still cost a lot of money.

We are getting the transport system Manchester needs. Unfortunately to get it means it will take time with a lot's of disruption. The Metrolink 2nd city centre crosing is currently being built, the Ordsall Cord has just started, meaning trains wlll run striaght through via Victoria to Piccadilly. Control of Bus services is being taken back under local aurthority control. Oyster cards, Manchester's version, are being introduced. Parts of the M60 will be smart motorways, etc. In general Gtr Manchester has been, and is, making a huge push on improving it's transport network.

Busses are all full on the key routes and they are the ones with bus lanes - its the smaller local services that are not full but they are subsidised and that is a whole other issue.

You know more about it than I do, and there's certainly a lot going on. However, I was disappointed to see recently that, regrettably, the one thing we can't do for the moment is use tram-trains as a way to add one or two more Metrolink lines using the railway routes (Marple first, then Glossop were the plans, IIRC).

These routes would have had tram-trains coming through Ashburys and Beswick (two stations within walking distance of our ground), then joining the existing East Manc line outside Piccadilly and going through the city centre to other destinations. However, a pilot scheme is needed to ensure that these vehicles are suitable for UK use, and that was to take place between Sheffield and Rotherham, starting in 2015. It had already been delayed for a couple of years, but then they announced a couple of weeks ago that even a 2017 date can't be met: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-36315711

Anyway, maybe this is something that will happen in due course. I still have a thing about potentially looking to open up the East Manchester loop for passenger traffic, as well. That's the line that's currently used only for freight and that goes down the side of the ground before heading to Victoria. I know this was discussed before the ground was opened but I don't think it's been mentioned since then.
