We are getting the transport system Manchester needs. Unfortunately to get it means it will take time with a lot's of disruption. The Metrolink 2nd city centre crosing is currently being built, the Ordsall Cord has just started, meaning trains wlll run striaght through via Victoria to Piccadilly. Control of Bus services is being taken back under local aurthority control. Oyster cards, Manchester's version, are being introduced. Parts of the M60 will be smart motorways, etc. In general Gtr Manchester has been, and is, making a huge push on improving it's transport network.

I wrote my thesis on this in 1975, its taken sometime but they seem to be on the right lines.

A first stage for city matches could be a train that ran from Stalybridge, via Ashton, to Ashburys with an extra station being added near the Mercedes garage. It would only run on match/event days and would effectively be a non-stop shuttle service running from 1200-1800. If that was coupled with ALL trains stopping at Ashburys during those same 6 hours, much car use would stop. As I'm not familiar with the logistics of the first option (Stalybridge -Ashburys), the option of all trains stopping at Ashburys cannot be that difficult, can it?

I have been saying for ages that a railway station next to the Etihad is needed. The trams are fine as far as they go, but they don't have the necessary capacity, and further extensions to the ground will make them still more inadequate. A service could then run from Victoria to the Etihad then on to Ashburys and beyond - destinations could be Stalybridge, Glossop, Marple or even beyond. Of course it will cost money but it is needed and potentially could form a plank in the general transport infrastructure as well.

We aren't getting anywhere near the transport system Manchester needs, not by a long shot!

Seems like a good solution to me. If the infrastructure, line into Piccadilly or Victoria, is there then City should pursue this. Just open on up on match-days. if you could travel to the ground from Piccadilly by train, I'd use it. Suspect it would be very popular, and yet I get the impression that train out to Man Utd is not used very much at all after the Metrolink was built.

Busses are all full on the key routes and they are the ones with bus lanes - its the smaller local services that are not full but they are subsidised and that is a whole other issue.
The thing is Gaudion, the smaller local ones are a link for some people without access to a cars or any other sort of transport, the would other wise be stuck for getting about.

I've said this myself, what about a shuttle service between Victoria and Ashburys or Belle Vue on match days or when concerts are on, stopping at a new stadium rail station, it could connect with services to the east at Ashburys, and services to the north at Victoria. Also isn't the old Park station not that far, ie in walking distance, and couldn't that be reopened ?

Seriously doubt the second city crossing is worth a wank. I'm no expert but surely we've gotta do better with transport to and from the stadium? Is the train line a definite no go?
