Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

Starts off about the Industry that was in east Manchester providing 70% of Manchester's Industrial jobs. In the 70's the loss of Industry from the area and then the land lying dormant through the late 70's into the 1980s.

Goes on to explain the vision of regeneration of East Manchester in the 1990's. The Velodrome was built for the second failed Olympic bid and then the rest of Sport City came with the Commonwealth games. Originally the Stadium was to be used by the FA to play FA Cup Semi Finals and England games etc. That fell through so City were approached to be permanent tenants.

After the take over in 2008 ADUG pledged three promises to Manchester.

1) Build a World Class Team
2) Support City's work in the Community
3) Form a partnership with the Council to regenerate East Manchester with World Class sports facilities, Community projects and housing.

Sports led regeneration is a phrase used.

Originally it was planned as a 20 year project but with the recession thats now a 30 year project.

Leisure facilities will be the last part of the project, Hotels, Casino, restaurants, Cinema's etc........they have to build the residential part first, and get young people through the University. They are aiming to replicate whats in Manchester City centre in "downtown" East Manchester.

Ancoats has been planned to be a residential area and commercial with new jobs etc. Housing in this area will a mix of family and for young people with affordable housing, both rental and to buy.

Lots of Companies inquiring about relocating to the EITHAD campus, from London and abroad including South Africa and USA.

The canals will be used to enhance the standard of life for people both living and working in the area.

Innovation in Tech will play a large part in the area, the word they use is "Embedded".

National sport entity's agreements are in place for them to come. A University Campus will be built in East Manchester.

ADUG is very loyal and will be very supportive of East Manchester, and they stress the long term vision.

They ask the question will there be a day when you'll look at whats been created and say it's finished....the answer it will "Be Down", "Organic" with growth out pacing the decay. There will always be a whats next!!

I thought we were fencing off canals to prevent loss of life rather to enhance the standard of life. Fence every kerb too to stop people walking in front of buses.

I don't think it's something that would be imminent, at all. Some years hence, maybe, when MMU and the RL are fully ensconced at the Campus and there's significant development of the Collar Site.

There's not only the Etihad and the Swamp, but Old Trafford cricket ground hosts a few as well. They have Billy Joel next week and Liam Gallagher in August, I believe.

Liverpool is at a geographical disadvantage when it comes to taking a large slice of this business. Manchester has almost 12 million people within a 50-mile radius of the city centre, so is more attractive to promoters than a city that has maybe not much more than half that. Committed fans will travel vast distances to see their idols in concert, of course, but a lot of people who attend these events simply want to attend a big occasion featuring a well-known name. A casual punter of this nature from somewhere in Yorkshire might attend one of the Greater Manchester venues but not bother travelling the extra distance to Merseyside. Still, I'm sure LFC will manage to claim a share of the pie, but I suspect if the Etihad loses events to them, it will be a trickle rather than a flow.
 
Doesn't surprise me in the least that Labour are supporting this, they've thrown sweeties at nearly every other voting group , that's the football fan box ticked, whose next?
 
In 2016-17 season, there were 110,000 unique fans in the home areas of the Etihad.

There are probably people who would like to use Thetihad, but can't, because something else is already booked in (Rolling Stones were probably one, hence using that shithole).

For every one big event, they lose several days because of the time it takes to set it up & strip it down again & there is only a short period in the summer, to fit it in.

Klanfield could also cash in on taking the events which can't fit in Manchester.

The gigs that are on for a number of nights in a row like Take That probably reduce the set up hassles
