Something remarkable is happening at Manchester City’s Etihad Campus – as this stylish CGI shows.
I recently accepted an invite from Paula Jupp for a look behind the scenes at Co-op Live.
If, like me, you’ve spent most of the last two years working from home, you may have missed the significance of the building work currently taking place on land next to the football stadium.
Co-op Live will be a 23,500 music venue with a huge emphasis on sustainability.
Los Angeles-based Oak View Group (OVG) is behind the project with Manchester-based City Football Group (CFG) a JV partner.
Harry Styles has invested in Co-op Live and there’s more than a passing reference to Manchester’s music scene and The Haçienda.
Paula is selling 28 x 16-seat suites at the venue, which will stay open until 2am.
Co-op Live is due to open in December 2023 and it will stand and fall on the quality of the acts it hosts.
According to Paula it will host 120 shows in its first year, rising to 150 in year three. Around 80% of the shows will be music-based with the rest being a mix of sport and family shows.
The owners hope the venue will be able to attract blue ribbon events from London, like the BRIT Awards.
Of course, Co-op Live will be in competition with the established AO Arena in Manchester and it will be interesting to see how that plays out.
Either way it’s a sign of Manchester’s growing international reputation that the Oak View Group has chosen the city to build the venue.
