The collar site and stadium is next according to some ITK´s on here as well so it might be correct info..
Phase 1 of the collar site is due to be finished in 2016. Still not heard anything concrete on the stadium expansion completion dates apart from 3 - 4 years. I believe we are still awaiting the nod from HRH Mansour on the final design. Forget about the 3 tier idea as this hasn't been mentioned to my knowledge and the plans I have seen are certainly nothing like that. And trust me the club would not be giving anyone "heads up" on information until the contract was signed and sealed.
So its 4 tiers then....... those trams are going to struggle with a 90,000 capacity stadium
I can't help but feel there is a degree of laziness when it comes to transportation for the stadium and East Manchester as a whole. Old Trafford has tram, train and even canal links whereas we do not. There is potential for all three if the club and council pulled their finger out.
If the club and council want to do what we are led to believe - expand the stadium, open a leisure attraction of 'national significance', build new houses to attract people to the area than transport has to be improved. I can't fault the new community centre with a college and leisure centre. The new trees & foliage will transform the area. But the transport plan is not quite right.
This council are overly obsessed with trams and are subsequently blinded by other transport opportunities. The club have one eye on the money made from the North car park. Both have consequently lead to serious transport problems which have not been addressed until now.
Ashburys station is rarely utilised. Indeed, there is an non-electrified train line right next to the stadium which is a spur from the Huddersfield line. This line is connected to Victoria, but would need a new bridge over Ashton New Road and some new rail being laid to connect it to Piccadilly. I know I sound like Jimmy Saville and "the age of the train" - but honestly, I feckin hate those buses or queuing up in a car. I know thousands of other people do, otherwise people would not evacuate two minutes before the final whistle. It only really seems to occur in large numbers at our ground.
The Ashton Canal - not utilised despite Urban Splash's wish to revive the canal. It would need some work, but if the Holt Town estate is destroyed in favour of houses (as is likely) then it will in the city's interest to improve the canal. The canal terminates at Ducie Street behind Piccadilly station so its not like it leads to a dead end. Many City fans walk down the towpath on matchday so why not ferry along it from the train station and free up a few hundred spaces for the trams and buses?
The truth is, a lot of City fans and visitors to a possible leisure site in Manchester will arrive via Piccadilly or Victoria. Anyone who has been to a 60k concert at the stadium will know it is even worse getting out. I dread to think what it will be like at 60,000 each week.
