Just read this article...

It's about the RWC in Sep/Oct 2015. United have refused use of there ground so the Etihad has been added onto the shortlist. Article states we'll have a capacity of 60,000?
Wondered if this was crap research on behalf of the journalist or whether this is what's been said to the RWCL?

Just noticed i've repeated Petrushas post... soz mate!

all/or most standing could reach 60k?

Re: Etihad Campus & potential new stadium

I think its more or less certain that the Etihad wont be a 60k seat venue by 2015.

There is an outside chance it could be a 60k venue in 10 years
but I reckon the timescales we have all had in our minds (at least those people on this thread) have failed to take into account that not a single additional seat has been added in almost 4 1/2 years of ADUG ownership.

Its plain now that some serious rejigging has gone on and that whatever was being shown to players and other interested parties whilst Garry Cook was in post is no longer the focus of the club.

That said the investment in the academy is the logical thing to focus on and with the announcements about City Soccer Schools across the globe coming next we are slowly but surely seeing boxes being ticked leading to the stadium development starting in perhaps 2-3 years, IMHO.

This is sickeningly disappointing, and IMO highly misguided on the club's part, if true.

No announcement yet made.

This summer events already in place mean no changes.

That means any start date will be summer 2014 - academy goes live then interestingly - perhaps a further year for planning etc allowing a further summer of concerts etc?

It hints at a start date of 2015 for any substantial changes at the earliest, if there are any to happen.

I hope I'm wrong but I fear I'm not.
That should be another 500 pages of 'not a lot' of news

Really?!

A lot of people have wasted a lot of time, effort and money and continue to do so on a daily basis then.

Might as well not bother work tomorrow as the club are more interested in overseas soccer schools than developing the Campus.

Cheers for the heads up FBloke.

So you say that the Etihad will be a 60k venue by 2015?

I await the announcements with interest.

I can vouch for whatever GX says. He isn't just guessing and as far as the stadium and campus go, he knows what's going on.

I dont doubt what GX has seen and what he has said.

I do have doubts that we will be seeing the current stadium remodelled and capable of holding 60,000 in two years time.

I simply suggested that it might be more like 5 years hence before anything substantial has occurred vis a vi capacity.

According to Wiki, our capacity went up by 80 odd seats this season, how though I have no idea.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_Manchester_Stadium

The end behind the concerts can be worked on during any summer. So it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if concerts continue when the roof is raised.

I think I would class the City Soccer Schools thing as more City In The Community work than a serious initiative to partner the Etihad Campus, personally. I mean sure, the one in the UAE is now the biggest in the Middle East area, and sure, it employs five full time coaches, but let's not forget that they only run 10-week courses. This isn't something that's going to produce a potential gem and then ship them off to England for cutting, purifying and polishing into a flawless diamond, it's more of a year-round summer camp for parents wanting to give their kids both a fun activity and some mid-level football training.

I'd love to see City announce they're making actual residential academies around the world on the Etihad Campus mould, where decent youngsters actually spend several years before graduating or being passed on, though I suspect that's a good decade off if it's even a real plan (which it probably isn't, unfortunately).

I agree that residential 'academies' would be great but thats not what the schools are for they are for developing a link between kids and the club.

United's soccer schools were and are the same they are about earning revenue and generating awareness and brand loyalty.

That said a separate international academy presence is a separate issue and might well happen, certainly in the US, Africa and the Middle East.
