Manchester Airport next prize

Rory Jones, May 15, 2012

With the English Premier League trophy now firmly in the Manchester City cabinet, Abu Dhabi's growing influence in the British metropolis might just lead to another prized asset - Manchester Airport.

Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (Adia) is interested in bidding for a 50 per cent stake in Manchester Airports Group (MAG), it is understood.

Analysts say the bid has a better chance of being accepted by MAG and the relevant government authorities, due to the precedent set by Abu Dhabi in investing in one of the city's football clubs and expanding Etihad Airways' presence in Manchester.

"Almost certainly Etihad's growth in the city, as well as its affiliation with Manchester City, is a key factor in bringing Abu Dhabi's business expertise and management to the city," said Saj Ahmad, the chief analyst at StrategicAero Research, an aviation consultancy.

"With … Etihad making a name for itself in the city, Adia can leverage that connection to its advantage via marketing activities as well as new investment opportunities."

Manchester City won the Premier League on Sunday, following four years of heavy investment by its owner, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed.

MAG confirmed to The National it was considering selling a stake in its operation as a way of raising funds to bid for Stansted Airport, one of the four main London airports, along with Luton, Gatwick and Heathrow. MAG, in a joint statement with its owners, the English local government body, the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (Agma), said it was "exploring the opportunity to add a quality airport to the group."

According to media reports, Adia is bidding for a share of Manchester Airport with 3i Infrastructure, a UK investment firm. 3i declined comment yesterday.

Agma is made up of 10 different councils in the Manchester region, with Manchester City Council, the largest stakeholder with 55 per cent, and the other nine owning a 5 per cent stake each.

"Following a strategic review of the group's performance and future prospects, MAG is pursuing two key recommendations: one to explore the opportunity to add a quality airport to the Group; and the other, to bring in new equity investment as part of the deal. Both of these recommendations are interdependent and one will not happen without the other," the joint statement said.

Meanwhile, MAG confirmed it had started to invite detailed proposals from private investors.

It is understood other frontrunners for the stake in MAG are Cheung Kong Infrastructure, the investment vehicle of Asia's richest man Li Ka-shing, and Australia's Industry Funds Management.

"Even if there were no connection to the football club, the airport is a good revenue generator as well as having greater potential to grow as it's not bottlenecked with traffic like Heathrow is," said Mr Ahmad. "So it's clear Adia are investing for the long term.'

The UK's Competition Commission had ordered the Spanish-owned BAA, which owned and operated most of the UK's airports, to sell off Gatwick, Edinburgh and Stansted. The first two airports have been sold but Stansted is still not on the market pending appeals by BAA. If Stansted does come up for sale, MAG wants to have a war chest ready. The group missed out on purchasing Gatwick in 2009 by being unable to match the £1.5 billion (Dh8.86bn) price tag.

MAG would see its annual revenues grow by 80 per cent if it bought Stansted. Manchester Airport has direct flights to 220 destinations worldwide - more than any other UK airport.

Re: Etihad Campus & potential new stadium

Firstly apologies as i don't know how to post links. In the MEN tonight, under public and legal notices, there is a topic on MCC disposing of a (approx) 1 acre site bounded by Alan Turing way and Mill Street. Don't know Beswick very well but i assume it may be an area of interest to us?

Manchester City kicks off radical upgrade of stadium suites
<a class="postlink" href="http://www.incentivetravel.co.uk/venuesevents/7531-manchester-city-kicks-off-radical-upgrade-of-stadium-suites" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.incentivetravel.co.uk/venues ... ium-suites</a>

Fans and customers at the Etihad Stadium, home of Barclays Premier League Champions Manchester City, will be able to experience the finest hospitality in world football next season.
Looking back to its roots, the club has revealed a stunning overhaul to two of its prime hospitality suites. A newly named Connell Club will replace the club’s fine dining Boardroom offer, while The Mancunian will be radically upgraded too.

The new Connell Club marks the heritage of Manchester City as the only English football club believed to have been founded by a woman, philanthropist Anna Connell, in 1880.

Available on and off match day, The Connell Club will offer exclusive fine dining for up to 220 guests. Rubber stamped with the Connell Club crest, the suite will include ‘ambassador booths’ for a more intimate dining experience, with a gallery entrance paying homage to the club’s legacy.

Such is the attention to detail that the five special ambassador tables each represent an attribute to the original mark of the club. Each table is inscribed with the reference around the table edge and has its own commissioned plaque.

The Mancunian is given a new, ultra-modern look with space for up to 250 guests, encapsulating all that is Manchester with its musical and cultural heritage represented through communication touch points including lyrics from iconic Manchester bands and quotes from prominent Mancunians.

The place where ‘the City meets City’, The Mancunian will combine the ultra-modern feel with elements from yesteryear, featuring displays of lyrics from classic football chants, to bespoke wall art commemorating some of the club’s most iconic players.

Work starts on the suites soon to ensure they are ready for the start of the 2012/13 season.

Manchester City’s marketing manager Justice Ellis said: “We wanted to match what we have achieved on the pitch with our hospitality offer, and we’re thrilled with the look and feel of these plans in anticipation of what is to come at the Etihad Stadium next season.

“Both the Connell Club and The Mancunian have been meticulously planned to represent the aspects on which the club is formed, from a proud history, unique culture and loyal fan-base.

“Manchester City is a global brand, proud of its roots. We are taking these spaces onto another level, expressing the character of the club and creating an experience unrivalled anywhere in world football.”

The overhaul to The Mancunian and introduction of the Connell Club comes hot on the heels of the club delivering a stadia first with the launch of a Harvey Nichols concept box at the Etihad Stadium.

What was a traditional 8ft x 11ft platinum hospitality box has been transformed into an ultimate experience for men and women. The space, also available on and off match day, demonstrates the club’s commitment to working with its key partners to add a new dimension to their brand.

Justice Ellis added: “Our vision is to develop world class facilities for the future. This extends to our match and non-match day hospitality, where concepts such as the Harvey Nichols box, new hospitality areas, City Square and the EA SPORTS dug-out create unique and exciting experiences for all of our fans and guests, every time they visit.

“Next season, we intend to push this further as we bring more brands to life, introducing even more surprises for visitors to the Etihad Stadium.”

Ha ha I love this - not only would Rags be putting money in the Sheikh's pockets every time they fill up their cars with fuel, this would mean they'd be doing the same every time they took a Bargain Basement Package Holiday to Benidorm or Magalluf too!

Oh actually that's not right is it? As Rags fly from Heathrow, Gatwick or Stansted... never mind.

Well Abu Dhabi owns about 15% of Gatwick and if they made move for Manchester, then they would probably get Stansted too as MAG want to buy another airport.

This genuinely takes things to a completely different level! We are going to be so far ahead its just untrue! I remember when Franny Lee took over and upscaled the catering and hospitality by bringing in the Stannleylands hotel. But FFS this is ridiculous! Eat your heart out trafford scum we are coming to get you!
