A SCHOOL in the top flight of education is helping to shape the life of the next generation of footballers at the current Premier League leaders.

Representatives of Manchester City Football Club have visited Ripon Grammar School, which is rated as outstanding by Ofsted, to help model the youth academy and first team training facility it aims to complete before the 2014/15 season.

Alongside 16 pitches and a 7,000 seater stadium in Manchester, there will be boarding accommodation for around 40 young players, who will combine living, training and playing at the academy and attending St Bede’s College, Manchester for their education.

The Department for Education recommended the club use the North Yorkshire school to shape their plans as it is the only state boarding school in Yorkshire and the second highest performing of all state secondary schools in Yorkshire and the North East, based on 2013 A-level results.

Des Coffey, education and welfare consultant to Manchester City, said: “We are trying to do as much research as possible in order to provide the very best opportunities for our boys and young men both in their education and in their football.

“We came to Ripon with an open mind, but also with lots of questions.”

Manchester City and college officials met with Marita Murray, deputy headteacher and head of boarding at the school, and were taken on a tour of its boarding houses for girls and boys by students.

The boarders were asked about their daily routine, social activities and trips out, the disciplinary structure and their relationship with house parents and teachers, as well as bedtimes, laundry, mobile phone use and having friends to visit.

Nic Scott, head of safeguarding and child protection at the football club, said: “It’s been great to talk to the students, who were candid and positive about their experience here.

“Ripon is a very happy ship, and if we can create some of that by finding out how they’ve achieved it it’s very useful to us.”

The school’s headmaster Martin Pearman said: “We were delighted to help Manchester City see boarding in action, to offer them the benefit of our experience and for our boarders to share their views.

“Like Ripon Grammar School, the club’s young people will come from all over the country and the world.

“The key is achieving the right balance in providing a safe and caring home within an educational environment.”

St Bede's College and Manchester City are proud to be involved in a unique educational programme to help develop the stars of the future. Players in the Manchester City Under 14 and Under 15 squad are now full-time students at St Bede's College. Previously, the players were taken out of their separate schools for training one day a week, with additional football work at Platt Lane in the evenings. Now thanks to this initiative, the first of its kind at a Premier League club, the boys now receive top quality education together as a group five days a week as well as training with City coaches every day.

While at St Bede’s the boys integrate with other students, but just as importantly the programme allows them to spend more time with their families in the evenings. The three-year programme, which began last September, also meets requirements the Premier League’s Elite Player Performance Plan which sets out to provide more coaching and playing time for young players alongside a strong education programme.

Mark Allen, Head of City’s Academy, stated:

“It's a pre-scholarship football and education programme, and we worked in partnership with St Bede's to give the boys a timetable that gave them appropriate education for their age with access to the right number of GCSEs.

“We have married that with a full-time football programme that works towards our plan to create the elite players that we want at Manchester City in the future.”

Dr Dando, Director of Studies stated:

“City, ourselves and most importantly the parents like the better quality of life that this is providing for the children,”

“Now they don't have to do a full day at school followed by travelling in the evening before training, then getting home late. This is a much more integrated system which has benefits for everyone involved.”

think when its finished jrb you've got a very big project on your hands, what you need to do is go through all your pics from the first breaking of the ground, through every step of the build, and have your very own thread that nobody can post on,it should contain the time line of the build,so we can glide through it,with out all the waffle. a sort of grand designs in pictures.

would that be possible jrb ?mods? you've done loads of great work, and the thread would be there to catalogue a huge milestone in our club

or even do a book with gary james :)

if you can be arsed that is :)

re-arrange this well known sentence...

OFF F*CK ;-)

What would you say has been the biggest single mistake of your career? If you had your time again, what would you do differently?

SHB: The Transport Innovation Fund (aka The Congestion Charge referendum in 2008). It was not a mistake but it was a low moment about a particular failure.

London Road Fire Station – it’s not personal but it is a regret that we have not been able to deliver this major redevelopment. I am passionate about it because I think it is such a waste. Their argument that there is not a demand for more hotels is ludicrous; we are deluged with hotel operators desperate to find sites in the city. It is still appalling that this site has not been brought forward and wrong that we are still not clear what the structural condition of the building is actually like.

The Supercasino loss – not because I am pro-gambling but because of how it would have generated so much value around the stadium area. There is still a development to bring forward that would underpin the current offer and generate significant investment and jobs.

You have to be resilient.

Same, I'd love it if we had a City Ice Hockey team, an indoor arena for UFC aswel.

I'm with you on that one. Even if it housed the Phoenix and allowed them to push to be back in the top league again - Silverblades at Alty just isn't a patch on the likes of Motorpoint Arena etc.

Isn't that a temporary building anyway?

Altrincham Ice Rink

altrincham-01.jpg

The brief was to design an ice rink capable of seating 2000 people that can be erected in a short space of time and also be easily demountable in a few years time for reuse elsewhere.

Although the plans were to move into a modern new permanent Ice Rink in Altrincham (not sure how those plans are progressing if at all) how feasible is it for something to be situated at the Etihad Campus instead? If they had considered moving Lancs CCC at one stage, then surely moving the Ice Hockey team isn't that controversial.
Phoenix have won the Premier League again this season, but lack of investment seems to be preventing their move 'up' to the Elite league.

Do all the workers have NDA's in place as I'm surprised not one leaked photo from inside. All photos have been official ones inside the perimeter haven't they?
