The stadium was designed as a football stadium that was a condition of City moving in. This is the difference between CoMS and The London Stadium, there was a long term plan for after the games was over. CoMS was a clever design as it made use of the geology of the area being high above the water table so they were able to put the pitch 7M below ground level. An athletics track needing a bigger bowl than the football pitch, the lower level was filled and only three stands constructed with the north stand being temporary, to allow space for field sports. Sport England mainly funded the stadium from the lottery and Manchester City Council are the owners, it’s leased (250 years) to City for £4M per year, this money is ring-fenced for Manchester sport If City were to buy it the proceeds would have to paid back to Sport England and Manchester sport would loose out The stadium was handed over as a shell, City funded the fitting out and of course have paid for all the improvements upgrades etc in fact the south stand extension cost almost as much as the stadium to build. Maine Road was indeed given to the council for redevelopment so, to say we got it for free is untrue and in a few more years the lease costs will have covered the construction.
