From the video, it seems as if they were just standing up for themselves. The guys waited outside the casino for them and just happened to get battered. It's not as if Kelvin & his mate went looking for them.

Doesn't matter if they were standing up for themselves ....... because as soon as the "attackers" hit the floor the element of "self defence" disappears. If they had smacked them and left them alone once they were down on the floor the chances are they would not have even been charged...... but to kick the "attacker" in the head 3 times is a cowardly act and that's the reason they are inside.

Surely Steven Gerrard beating up a DJ for not playing Phil Collins is much worse, no?

depends.
Having not seen the video of steven gerrard, its hard to say. generally an unprovoked attack is more serious and personally I cannoy believe the Liverpool captain did not get a custodial sentence.

But as many have pointed out had kelvin and his friends merely defended themselves they would not have been charged. Its the kicking the bloke in the head when he is on the floor that gets him arrested charged and jailed. The man on the floor poses no danger and so the kicking in the head 3 times is deemed an unprovoked attack. If the mans friends were still a threat and there was a fear that the man on the ground was going to get up and also pose a threat then a case could be made for further proportionate violence being in self defence, but no court is going to judge three kicks to the head as proportionate to that threat.
