It's because our teams are working at 95% constantly. The opponents faced in the league are all worthy for a win (except sheffield).
It's hard to up the effort like euro opponents can do. Even City suffered with it this season.
All the bollocks about City making the league a procession is just that, bollocks.
Our league and fa don't give a monkey's about Euro games. Euro leagues teams are given special dispensation. Just look at the preparation time Madrid had for the 2nd leg.
