Europa League (Merged)

Re: Uefa cup pitfalls for the rest of the season?

To remain in the CL would be perfect but dropping into the Europa Cup rather than finishing 4th is a good thing. Coefficient points gained in the Europa Cup, although only half of what we would attain in the CL is essential. City's ratings last year put us in Pot 3 and one of the reasons we ended up in such a difficult group. We need to get into Pot 1 and the only way is by qualifying and winning/drawing in UEFA competitions. We also win nearly £400,000 (CL) and £200,000 (EC) in prize money for winning games. This income will be essential when the Fair Play Rules come in in 2015.

Only this.

On the flip side, the effects of the travel to far flung places could see a disastrous effect on the prize we would cherish the most; i.e the Premier League title.

Don't forget Spurs (and probably United) could now end up playing a dozen or so games less than us after the turn of the New Year.

A run to the UEFA Cup Final would almost certainly have cost us 3rd place and an FA Cup win last season and if it costs us the league, all your little bonuses above will count for sweet FA because they are minor rewards in comparison to fulfilling what has been, for many of us, the ultimate dream.

Re: Uefa cup pitfalls for the rest of the season?

We need to get as many points as we can so we can move into pot 2, long term our goal to be a force in Europe requires easier draws in the Group stages on the Champoins League.

Re: Uefa cup pitfalls for the rest of the season?

The UEFA cup can be good fun for us the fans, would be great to win and we could play our League cup team for the games, unless it's a real toughie.

The real problem is that even if you play the 2nds, the league games move to a sunday, meaning that our rivals have already played before us, we know their results and it puts a bit more pressure on us each time we know someone has closed the gap with a win/draw.

Totally Agree. PL is bigger this year for us, than Europe.

Re: Uefa cup pitfalls for the rest of the season?

I hope we take Europa league quite serious. Our only chance to win something outside England for now. Also I just recently found out that you can win league + other cups in the same season, who would have thought that O.O

If we fail on Wednesday or Napoli win then our League cup team will become our Europa League team.

I see this as a fantastic development for some of our younger players and a good run out for the older guys as it keeps them match fit. It's a win win.

This is not that likely.

The squad is designed for an number of players to be rotated so as to handle two games a week. This will still be the case if City drop to the Europa League.

With one Premier League match a week, if the youngsters are played in the Europa League there will be a number of players not getting enough playing time to stay fit.

City will continue to rotate the full backs, the midfielders, and the three strikers between PL and EL matches. The strongest team will more likely to be used in the PL.

Re: Uefa cup pitfalls for the rest of the season?

The Europa Leauge/Cup should be THE LOWEST priority. The only reason we should play a strong team is IF we were to ever get KO ed in BOTH Cups, especially the FA Cup. Tough to see that happening since we got such a great draw ;-).

The travel isnt going to help. Lets hope we get a small club in the round of 32, do OK in the first away leg then take our chances in the home leg. After that, reassess and see where we are.

-- Tue Dec 06, 2011 9:48 am --

Just looked and Spurs are practically out of this competition.

Dates of KO games:

1/32 Feb 16, 23

1/16 Mar 8, 15

1/8 Mar 29, Apr 5

semis Apr 19, 26

Make of this what you want.......
