In the Champions League you can get a referee from France one week, Spain after that, and then an Italian etc.

Why don't we import officials like this for the Premier League, and visa versa?

We all know how much presure Utd put the officials under, and they must fear going to Old Trafford 4 times a season, incurring the wrath of Fergie & Rooney; but a referee from Germany, who will be there once in a season, wouldn't give a monkensie!

I'd rather try our luck with referees from Latvia, Bulgaria and Greece than with Foy, Clattenburg and Dowd.

Absolutely agree. These officials should ref once a week, be incredibly well paid and live outside of the UK minus 2-3. This is the supposed "greatest league in the world".

NO.

It pisses me off watching La Liga / Champions League games as the refs are so so whistle happy which in my opinion ruins the game.

Too many stoppages, decent tackles / slight pushes are often unnecessarily punished, no flow to the game. NO THANKS

Sounds like a standard City game then except in the rare event we get a ref like Dean or Oliver. At least the foreign refs would be consistent with their twattery rather than "only if it's City".

Colina is the Maradona of referees!

I'm not expecting anything like his standard but I do believe a great many of the mistakes being made by Premier League referees is down to presure. This can often be built up over a period of time. After United's game at Chelsea Fergie made a point of mentioning the linesman Darren McCann, who he claims gave two penalties at Old Traford (against Utd) but couldn't see the alledged incident of Ivanivic on Welbeck. There's obviously nothing that can be done after the event so why mention the linesman's name? Fergie knows there's always a next time.

If you get a German Ref in week 1 you can have a different German Ref in week 11, week 21 & week 31, however many times you want to work it. Das ist gut ya!

I speak to quite a few foreign refs and although they would love to do an English Premier league game they are not allowed to under UEFA rules. Only the top few refs in each country get a UEFA licence to ref in the Champs & Europa leagues.

A few years ago i used to work for Brookes Mileson, owner of Gretna. He asked if i could do a few pre season friendlies for them. However, Scottish FA told him i could not be used as under UEFA rules i was classed as a "foreign referee" and as i did not have a UEFA licence. All games played at Gretna had to be reffed by a Scottish ref. Until those numpty's at UEFA change the rules it is just not going to happen.

Also, i think you would find that Spanish, French, German, Italien refs are in general no different to ours.

Correct Richard, I think there's a "grass is greener" mentality in the UK when the subject of foreign referees is brought up. Ask fans of (let's say), Heerenveen, Breda or Ajax what the standard of Dutch referees is like and they'll all carp on about how awful they are. Germany? Ditto. France? Ditto. In fact a lot of fans from across the channel do exactly the same as is happening here, they all wish they could have an English referee. Everybody wishes they could have someone else's refs.

Why does this happen? Quite simply, the Champions League and UEFA officials being appointed to those games. If you had say, Spanish La Liga referees every week there would soon be moans about decisions. There is no perfect refereeing panacea over the water, they're all human too.
