Eusebio

Yeah, and that tall, gangly CF got the fifth one. Lovely player, lovely person. Just wish it had all come right for him in '68. RIP big man!

Great player, and a gent. One of those players that you never hear a bad word about.

I was listening to 5Live on the way home from my night shift this morning when the news broke, and imagine my surprise when I found out that his crowning achievement was playing against the Filth in 1968. They managed to mention 'Manchester United' 10 times on the first installment, then got Crerrand on for an interview, who basically talked about 'Manchester United' and how many times Eusebio had been to Old Trafford and how much he loved them.

As I said, great, great player, but our media are going to just go on about one game, and rest assured Charlton will be on soon, and will definitely mention Munich.....

Personally, I'd have Eusebio over Pele, he seemed a harder player to me.
Sad loss, a true version of the much overused 'Legend.'
I dont know that is a tough one, Eusebio was for me the player of the 66 World Cup but dont forget Pele was kicked out of the tournament and came into his own in 1970, Pele just edged it for me

the fact he is talked about in the same league as pele tells you how good he was. to me eusabio shades it as he played against much better opposition than pele ever did. pele had to come to Europe to prove just how good he was.
Pele would have never played in Europe he knew he would have been kicked out of every match, there were some real hard case defenders back then just itching to make a name for themselves

A truly great player and absolute gentleman. Eusebio definitely one of the best players in the world ever. Apart from England winning the World Cup in 1966 Eussebio was the outstanding memory of that competition and certainly the best player. IIRC he was actually from Angola originally.

At the time Angola was a Portugese colony, great player and no one in the UK media will mention his terrific '66 World Cup,but will go on ad infinitum about him playing against the fucking rags.RIP.

Agreed "one of the best players in the world ever, he was truly outstanding".

I will always remember the save from Stepney that kept out his volley in the European Cup final at Wembley.

RIP Eusebio a true world football legend.

When I posted the above comment I was going to add...... expect a rag wankfest in the media but I didn't think it was appropriate, I can be naive at times.

Sad news, for one so comparatively young. RIP Eusebio.

Two videos here. The first has all his '66 WC goals, the second is that game against North Korea. I like the way he takes time to sign an autograph at the end!

From Mozambique (also a Portuguese colony) apparently.

He was from Mozambique, which is also a former Portugese colony.

sad if true. a fantastic player that had me enthralled as a 12 year old watching the 66 world cup.

Exactly the same for me, a class act as a player and a man, His strength of character in dragging Portugal back single-handed from 3-0 down in the QF against N.Korea was amazing.

RIP

I was there. I got tickets for my 14th birthday so I could see Brazil but - as it happened - this game was the highlight.

A truly great player with none of the histrionics. Scored an average of almost a goal a game over 700-odd matches.

RIP.

Truly one of the greats of the game and comparable to the likes of Cruyff, Maradona and Pele.

R.I.P.

footballs greatest now on Sky really great players only come around once and a while.

greatest Portuguese player ever for me even more than Tranny!

The 3 things I remember most clearly about the 66 World Cup are Pickles the dog finding the stolen trophy, the fuss about Eusebio's goals v North Korea and the World Cup Willy badges which came free with 6d bars of nougat.
