Great player, and a gent. One of those players that you never hear a bad word about.
I was listening to 5Live on the way home from my night shift this morning when the news broke, and imagine my surprise when I found out that his crowning achievement was playing against the Filth in 1968. They managed to mention 'Manchester United' 10 times on the first installment, then got Crerrand on for an interview, who basically talked about 'Manchester United' and how many times Eusebio had been to Old Trafford and how much he loved them.
As I said, great, great player, but our media are going to just go on about one game, and rest assured Charlton will be on soon, and will definitely mention Munich.....

the fact he is talked about in the same league as pele tells you how good he was. to me eusabio shades it as he played against much better opposition than pele ever did. pele had to come to Europe to prove just how good he was.

A truly great player and absolute gentleman. Eusebio definitely one of the best players in the world ever. Apart from England winning the World Cup in 1966 Eussebio was the outstanding memory of that competition and certainly the best player. IIRC he was actually from Angola originally.

Sad news, for one so comparatively young. RIP Eusebio.

He was from Mozambique, which is also a former Portugese colony.

Exactly the same for me, a class act as a player and a man, His strength of character in dragging Portugal back single-handed from 3-0 down in the QF against N.Korea was amazing.

I was there. I got tickets for my 14th birthday so I could see Brazil but - as it happened - this game was the highlight.
A truly great player with none of the histrionics. Scored an average of almost a goal a game over 700-odd matches.

The 3 things I remember most clearly about the 66 World Cup are Pickles the dog finding the stolen trophy, the fuss about Eusebio's goals v North Korea and the World Cup Willy badges which came free with 6d bars of nougat.
