Everton (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Turned out a good point at the end of the day. Unfortunate for us that we made critical errors but i can take that. We are a fairly new team especially at the back and i suppose mistakes will happen, hopefully the lads learn from it and take away the positives going forward. Still a great season for us and 18 other teams would swap with us in a heart beat. Football is a short term sport and there is always another season around the corner to improve and go again. As long as we are competitive, and we most certainly are, then we should be happy about that. Its only a game.

The fact that Khusa/Guehi/Nunes have gotten this far being so good means I can forgive them an off night. Hard to be mad at anyone tbh. From 3-1 down to 3-3 showed some serious balls and character. Hard to be mad at Guehi for an uncharacteristically poor mistake. There was definite headloss at 2-1 but I think that came as much from Everton suddenly finding a huge second wind and being happy to let the game be end to end.

As an aside, Doku is an object lesson for all those currently writing off Semenyo. Some people never learn.

After the disappointment of last night here's a reminder of how bad we used to be both on and off the field. I remember that dickhead with the radio i used to see him a lot at Maine Road. Was he ever seen again after this lol?

That was the match when we trooped back to the in-laws' house near Maine Road to be greeted by my mother in law saying "well at least they didn't lose".

Something that is really beginning to fuck me off is, despite all his positives in shot stopping, and being a fucking giant, Donnaruma is also a bit of a fucking wet wipe. He doesn't control his box at all from set pieces, 1v1 he has complete dominance but when it comes to corners he just falls about and doesn't do the basics. Can forgive errors, part of the game and they're part of learning, but he does it nearly every game. You're fucking humungous man, run through whoever is in your way and get a hand to the ball!

If Dalot isn't getting red for the tackle on Doku then Keane wouldn't be getting one either, despite it being studs on and meeting the LotG re serious foul play! The reffing in the PL is atrocious, manipulative and unfit for purpose. The reason we didn't win that game by half time is anyone's guess, Well done to come back from shitty reffing, and against a team that I doubt has scored three goals in one half any game this season shows a mentality that will chase the Arse right to the line.

Yes he has to shout KEEPER!!!! and fucking take everybody in the way out.

Someone needs to explain this offside law to me. First picture Barry is clearly offside as the ball is played up to him

Second picture shows the player moving towards the ball so surely active from an offside position, no clear chance of a goal at this stage so why hasn't the liner put his flag up?

And were he to emulate Onana by charging out, missing the ball and thumping an attacker in the ear, we wouldn't get the same outcome that the Rags got versus Wolves. I agree he should be more dominant at set pieces. Not many attackers would relish a man mountain making their way towards them but I don't trust refs Guardiola was right when he pointed out the record we hold of giving oppo goalies free kicks in stark contrast to our goalie being fouled.

If we did that before Christmas we be all buzzing about the come back but because we had to win it’s a bad result

As a keeper I don’t think he could be blamed for the corner goal. Good delivery and into an area he couldn’t get to due to the sheer amount of bodies. He got a good punch onto an earlier one too. Donna was fine yesterday. He will get used to the league and assert himself more I think. He’s quite wiry though so I can’t see him building up too much

I’ve read different reports of when the lino flagged. If he did it straight away then it should have stopped play.

I've never been one for pointing at specific games, especially under the circumstances (i.e. two players only coming into the team in January, others only coming in due to injuries and so on), and you can't be 100% all the time but if I was to point to one game it would be the Old Trafford one, and I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it. We played pretty well in the Spurs and West Ham matches overall, just didn't convert enough chances but in the one at the rags we were pretty awful and it's the only match in which we've not played well this year.

Overall, the main difference between this side and the really good seasons is we're not keeping the ball as well as we used to and that's one of the big differences that Rodri makes. But I do think this group of players is good enough, you don't get to two finals with one trophy already in the bank and favourites for the other one, while still being in a title race (just) with 4 matches to play if you don't have something special about you. Just wish all the melts would recognise it instead of acting like entitled brats expecting us to win everything all the time.

We've reduced the instances where we're under pressure and collapse. We had that long period of 2nd half capitulations which we finally got a hold of. The 2nd half last night was a return to that period, which is to be expected when it's still a recently assembled team. We used to be able to win games because even if some were off it we had enough quality and enough on the bench to get the job done.

I'd say quite a few were pretty poor last night. Nunes had a shocker, when he could actually stay on his feet. Bernardo and Nico were both ineffective. Guehi and Khusanov were shaky. O'Reilly was pretty average. Cherki didn't play anywhere near as good as he usually does and Semenyo didn't do much either.

Ultimately you're going to drop points if so many have a bad game. First half was fine, but Everton didn't do much to suddenly get 3-1 up. We need to identify the right players this summer to ensure that we can cope with those situations. Maybe it was the lengthy break and we couldn't cope with the intensity last night?

As you say, if we can win the FA Cup for me that's a fantastic season. We've been dominant in the league so expectations are we should win it each year - in reality that's not going to happen but picking up one or two trophies is still fantastic and a big step up from last year.

How we should be benchmarking ourselves is on the level PSG and Bayern can hit - we want to be the best in Europe and we're miles off that.

The law is (to paraphrase) if the defender regains comfortable control of the ball unchallenged then a new phase of play starts. Unfortunately Guehi fucked up, it is what it is

I think realistically, it’s over for this year, Arteta has woken up from his defensive fugue state & got the Arsenal team playing again, their fixtures are mainly out of form teams, & teams on the beach, we have a who’s who of European place contenders, I don’t see Arsenal slipping up here ( although you never know!)
great to see Doku chipping in with some precise shooting, if we can just push on, finish strong & beat Chelsea in the final, I’ll take that.
Securing a CL place & integrating half a new team was the goal this year, everything else has been a bonus, especially after that rocky start to the season

So as soon as Guehi turns to play the ball before he even touches it it’s another faze? So what faze is Barry in? Because at that moment he is ofside still and interfering putting pressure on Guehi to make a decision! And how quickly the people in var the fourth official confirmed it was a different faze it’s a goal without even looking at what the Everton player was doing was complete one eyed bias from the officials! I guarantee if that was Arsenal they’d be looking at it a lot longer or var wouldn’t of even got involved
