Everton (FA Cup) Post Match Thread

I watched MotD last night as we were on first. Three people were booked during the game but the wankers at the BBC thought fit only to show one of the three - Ferny! It's laughable. Just goes to show I was right about the BBC footy coverage - partial to a sky blue card!

Graham Potter is a manager who I would say sets up a team brilliantly, when we played Brighton it was a tough game they where always a threat on the break able to pass through our press at times, same as villa under smith and Leeds earlier on in the season. Three sides who have spent a lot less than Everton but caused us some problems defensively and gave us a real tough game. If your main tactic is to try to keep city out for 120 mins you are going to lose it’s that simple

Got nothing against ancelotti but his tactics yesterday made mourinho look like Pep Guardiola

I had Ancelotti up there with the best but was so disappointed with his tactics yesterday. Negative, overly physical with Richarlison again highlighting all that is bad in modern football, ironically there is a great player in there if he just played to his strengths dropped the dark arts crap. Delighted we beat them particularly after their classless press release following the cancellation of our premier league match following our COVID outbreak.
 
people moaning about evertons tatics dont seem to realise carlo is an italian.famous for ultra defensive and hard to break down sides through the ages.i dont blame sides for not trying to take us on even if its tedious at times.the only thing i will say the teams who do try and have a go do seem to have more success against us even though not many beat us

The BBC edited did well to maximise Everton’s 26 per cent possession to make it look like an even contest. In fact it looked like Everton dominated the first half - which they clearly did not.

Absolutely....he’s maturing very well (apart from the odd press boo boo) his positional play is so much better this season, his decision making & game awareness has improved immensely, gone are the brain farts, and now that he understands how Pep wants him to play he’s really flourishing, I can’t remember the last time I groaned when his name was on the team sheet

I never felt like we were going to lose unless it was on penalties but in a tight game like that you can't be sure and they can be a threat from set pieces, which I thought we allowed them too many of. We defended set pieces really well though and Steffen only dealt with one shot on target; Zin handled the other.

What was particularly pleasing was that after we scored, we managed the game out without any real fuss.

This is isn't the first win that we have ground out this season and I have no doubt that in the past we would have come a cropper more often that we have this season. We aren't blowing sides away very often, which can make for more tension when watching, but, unless they should consistently let us down, we have to learn to trust in them to get the job done. I said to one of daughters who was flapping a little yesterday that it's a 90 minute game...

I thought the same, Everton have spent millions over the last few seasons and last night were just a Stoke throw back.
 
Ancellotti showed us absolute respect, he knew he could not play his normal game against us so he put everyone behind the ball and hoped for a breakaway or set piece goal.
It made it hard for us, but we played a good game kept patient and by pushing forward from the back it payed off and deservedly won the game, Ferno was outstanding he drifted between the lines and showed great intelligence, he rolled back the years, he should be given another 12 month contract.
Everyone played well, lets look forward to the draw for the semi final no one will be easy lets hope we can keep this form up to the end of the season.

Ancelotti is far less defensively minded that your old school Italian coach. IIRC, Chelsea scored a lot of goals when he managed them and I do remember thinking that it was disgraceful that he got sacked from there. That said, I have always thought him slightly overrated: I think he should have won more given the teams he has managed. He is a top manager though and a gentleman, one of football's good guys.

Yesterday he did what he thought was his best option against City and, if nothing else, had his team well drilled.

I read an old quote from Guardiola's time at Barca where he said it is legitimate for teams not to want the ball but his (Pep's) teams need the ball.
 
Havent got BT so yet another match I didnt watch.
Saw the highlights which dont really mean anything basically just showing a few goal chances from each team.

As others have said I was surprised the tannoy announcer thought Everton were playing utd. It's becoming a more common thing for people in the press/media to call City , utd. I wonder if it's done on purpose. I am sure I have heard match commenters call us utd this season.

Called it in the corruption thread. They completely altered the narrative with that highlight package last night. What they showed was not a true reflection of the game, and whilst it doesn't really effect us (you could maybe argue that it doesn't do us any favour commercially) it does demonstrate that the BBC far from impartial.

It's only as bad as the media (Sky/BBC/BT) prior to VAR. Look how many times they would show certain incidents on a loop (Aguero on Winston Reid being the prime example) in the highlights package, yet not even show certain incidents.

I've lost count of the amount of times MOTD would cobble their highlights package together to show a game where City won by the odd goal but battered the opposition, and they make it look like we were really luck to 'scrape' a win.

Some fantastic performances from the usual suspects, but Zinch imo was great. Dias seems to control when and where the whole defence goes, he would make a great future captain.
Gabby really struggled, to his credit he battled on and was smashed a few times but just got on with it. Not sure what the problem is with Sterling, his performances lately don’t warrant him a starting place. He went off, and 3 mins 20 seconds later, we score. Coincidence?
It definitely was a TEAM performance yesterday.
Bitterness across social media from all the usual jealous buffoons, who can only spout drivel.
At least a few of the genuine toffee fans appreciated us and recognised the mammoth task they had.
They stifled us by defending narrow and in numbers, hoping to catch us out, but Dias and Walker had it covered. A little mention for Laporte for his drive into the box to create the first goal.
Keep going Blues. It’s frustrating to watch teams parking buses, but that appears the way to try and contain us.
 
At the start of this season we had no Sane or Spanish Dave and an unfit Kun. My expectations were less especially after a relatively poor start.
Step forward Dias, Sir Phil, JB and Mr Whippy amongst others.
Raz is having a tough patch but I’d still rather him here than elsewhere.
