Everton - Post match thread.

Where to begin....ok! The referee clearly bent, those who thought this season will be any different than last are on drugs! The rags will win the league by a mile sky have made that decision along with the EPL no question at all. Given football forums are oh so sanitised and frequented by numerous pc loving, delicate wall flowers with bleeding hearts and delicate dispositions i will comment no further on the officiating this evening as I feel unable to refrain from using offensive words to portray my views.

The rest, I am afraid despite the somewhat loaded dice City proved that there is a continuing problem with beating any half decent side who plays deep and defends with a bit of spirit. It is in these matches you simply have to have players who can not only finish but only need one half chance to do so. Not need 3/4 chances. We have no such player, not quite flat track bullies but not the kind of players who can drag themselves out of the shit and snaffle three points from a game like tonight. The team who will win the league this season would have won tonight.

Their goal well Sane to blame (poor tonight-foul throws ffs) combined with a touch of luck for the rag twat. I dont blame the keeper for that one. Despite that and being a man down we had more than enough chances to win the game and once again simply could not finish. Aguero, Silva, Sterling, all guilty, and KDB needs to start contributing to the opposition goalkeepers work loads.

Yes we will blame the cu....referee, and as we equalised despite being a man down some will be taken in and think it was a great heroic performance against the odds. It wasnt at all, we had the chances to win and failed to take them. We have to accept we are going to be shafted by officials most weeks and accept that to win things will have to be better than the rest by a distance, on the evidence of the two games so far we are a decent side but some way off being good enough.

A lot to agree with here, my two peneth

I thought we were slow to attack against brighton, and like last year far to many sideway passes when our forwards who are quality and making all sorts of runs are not found because we prefer to keep possession and pass sideways. I could not understand why KDB and Silva played so wide for the first 30 mins (what was the reasoning?) There were big gaps in the middle but we had no one in there.

I'd love to know the difference in the number of forward passes from KDB now and the year we signed him.

Pep needs to get our creative midfielders looking forwards and quicker, they have the ability. Posession is sh*te if you don't create.

Things haven't changed up top or in defence since last season - we seem to need 10 chances before we score, both Aguero, Silva and others guilty. Where where the CD when Rooney scored?

Pep is the manager who is supposed to make players better but playing Sane as a wing back will crucify him, he has the pace and ability like Rashford but we aren't playing to his strengths.

Bottom line is, I expected pep to be more intelligent than what I'm seeing.

On a positive - we outplayed Everton with 10 men and I thought we deserved to win.

New season, same deficiencies.

The primary objective of the striker is to put the ball in the back of the net. I've criticised Aguero countless times already, so I'll not bother to repeat the same arguments ad infinitum. Jesus was poor today also.

What I will say is that we desperately need a top forward player if we are to have any chance of competing for titles this year. This game, like the previous game, like the Girona friendly, like all the preseason games, like all of last season have only reinforced this need.

Appalling officiating and wasteful finishing aside, we could and should have won this game with the right starting lineup and the right formation. I'm always hesitant to criticise Guardiola for obvious reasons, but it was clear as day that he got it badly wrong today. At least his substitutions were effective and we actually started to play better with 10 men.

At this point I'm just extremely disappointed that we seem no better than last season. The only positive from the game today was that Bernardo looked extremely dangerous for the few minutes that he was on the pitch. We need to play him and Sterling much more over the next few games. The Aguero Jesus partnership is completely ineffective.

Bernardo Silva looked good in his cameo, wouldnt be surprised if there are a few changes in our next match. We need to show much more composure in our shooting we are too anxious.

Ok so we get rid of a forward who has scored 20 plus goals for the last few years most teams in Europe would love to have him .well who do we replace him with ? Give us some names who Pep not thought of

What I enjoyed about him tonight was the fact that he drove at players and took them on. Often his final decisive ball can be lacking, but his directness certainly made them feel uneasy. That made a big difference for me.
Yes often reminds me of a certain player who's career just faded away. Grateful of his equalizer though.

Agreed, if rumours are true, not sure spending yet another shit load of money on another small forward in Sanchez will change anything.

Lots of people expressing lots of anger, and a few offering interesting observations from the first two games, so I'll try to be more constructive than angry.

We were quicker than we were at Brighton, and against a far better team, but it was a frustrating game plan from Everton, literally by them and for us. They defended well, but were cut open enough times in the first half to have killed off the game before they got a sniff. I have absolutely no idea why Aguero didn't pull the trigger, but it is getting to the point of ridiculousness that one of the best strikers in the world is becoming so gun shy. He needs to stop taking the third, fourth, fifth touches and either shoot or lay it off.

In the first half, we had one player put two shots on goal from th edge of the box. Who? Otamendi!!! This should be the wheel house of KDB and Silva, with the occasional Fernandinho shot. Instead, our "attacking" defender had more on target shots than our main strikers!

I am a little bemused by KDBs lack of attempt in goal when the keeper was out of his box (gave a bad ball to the advancing full back, who was tackled!) and why Sergio didn't even get a shot off when he only had the keeper to beat from the edge of the six yard box. I am also bemused at the notion that Sane can play left full back. He can't. It is stifling (killing?) his attacking game, because he is an impact dribbler, an explosive player, not the kind of "ploughing the furrow" defender who can get up and down the field, and his confidence is getting hammered! I thought this was the worst game I have seen from David Silva in a long time. How he can be one of Spain's top scorers, but barely ever shoot, let alone get the shot in target, for City is stupefying.

I think KDB is being asked to do too much...mainly because he can do it all...but it looks like he is being asked to go at 100% for 95 minutes, and do three jobs every game. As another poster mentioned, and I have pointed to in other games, he started out as one of our primary creative playmakers, to one of the most exhaustive pressers (both on the front line and right across the middle of the park), to being our DM/CM when we went to a back four and Fernandinho dropped into the LB position. Unfortunately, I foresee an early season fatigue injury for KDB, as he pushes himself past the threshold. I also see him getting openly frustrated on the field, especially with our profligacy in front of goal. He was livid with Aguero for not shooting when wide open, and allowing a 35 yr old Jagielka recover to put in a challenge. I hope against hope that Pep returns to Yaya/Fernandinho midfield, with Sterling/Bernardo/Sane in behind with Jesus up top against B'mouth, to give David and Kevin some rest. There will always be the second half, or last 30/20/10 mins, if needed, but they are carrying a massive load and it is costing them.

Pep is seeking something superhuman...and I don't think he realizes just how hard it is in THIS League. Barca strolled against 2/3 of the team's in La Liga, and Bayern steamrollered 3/4 of the team's in their League, because they simply bought every good player on every other team to blunt them the following season! It is a joke! However, Pep SAYS he has learned this League and has bought for the future. Really? I hope he has some 6' forward with some touch in his Rolodex, because right now we have flying wingers with no target man for crosses and the only chance we have to score is if we have enough space for our 5'8" attacking 6 players to have a minimum of three touches and an open goal...and even then it isn't enough!! When you look at the other top clubs, we see Lukaku/Zlatan, Morata/Costa/Batshuyai, Giroud/Lacazette, Kane/Janssen and we don't have anyone AT THE CLUB who fits that mound, let alone in the Starting XI or on the bench! I have discussed size, strength and the options they create and been pilloried, so I'll just leave it for the table to speak for it. I agree, that we are the most technically gifted squad in the League. So far, it has produced zero results.

Clearly, Pep can hardly wait for Mendy to be fit to play, and it may well be this weekend, because Danilo will be have to be on the right!

We are in for an interesting season, and it may be made far more interesting by what happens in the next 10 days!

The future is Blue.
