Everton Pre-Match Thread

Before I can decide if Mr Kevindxb is more likely to be "right" than Manuel Pelligrini could someone give me Kevin's CV and a list of the clubs he managed.

How people posting on forums get to know more about tactics or how the players are training or whether there are private problems to consider than the manager and his staff always confuses me...

If there are more than 1,000 Everton fans in Goodison Park who want to throw the game on Sunday, it can get to the players eventually. A flat atmosphere can mean a flat performance.

But don't expect Everton's players to give anything less than 100% in this game. They'll still believe they can put pressure on Arsenal. If Arsenal played at 3pm on Saturday Everton's season would be over by the time we played them, but them playing the day after still gives something to Everton to play for.

God I just want it to be Monday.

The update yesterday on the EFC official site was that Jagielka would probably make it, but Distin was 50/50

Wow! Big game this one. We've got this ... don't ask me why, I just know we've got this.
The West Ham game though, ... just don't let Joeleen play.

You're probably right.

I've not seen a single post calling for 4-4-2 against everton. Nearly all agree on Garcia starting. Lets see if Pelle will get this right, this time. I have a bad feeling he will do his usual and arrogantly play a weaken mid-field against a side that presses well. I really hope not.

Arrogant way= Fight fire with fire, throw all on attack against a team that does the same (e.g. Liverpool and Chelsea games)
Smart way= Have a strong midfield, boss the game and play with high intensity and working the ball cleverly.

We played a 4-4-2 against them in the game at the Etihad and they struggled to cope with our movement. If you look at the teams they have recently lost to, both play 4-4-2... if we look to match them there is nothing to suggest that will work. They are very good at playing their 4-5-1/4-3-3 and it has done them well against Arsenal, Chelsea and the Rags who all played with just one up top. I think we should concentrate on how we will play best and I think 4-4-2 will bring us more reward and allow us to find more space when their full backs push up. Everton tried a 5-4-1 at Southampton and so it is hard to know how they will lineup but I think we will have some success as long as we play with some balance. I think the same side as played against Palace, with Clichy possibly in for Kolarov and maybe Fernandinho in instead of Garcia so long as we ensure he is tasked with defensive duties.

Interesting analysis- I see your point. Going 442 is a gamble. 451 is more assuring and can be switched to 442 depending on the how the game goes. Remember, we're not playing at home and we are better playing 451 away from home.

I agree with you in that regard - it is a gamble. And we know the Pellegrini thread will be full of "should have played 4-5-1", "why wont he change his philosophy" nonsense if we don't win the game having played that way. For me a winning team, playing a consistent formation is more important. I don't think you should alter a winning side if you don't have to. We played a 4-4-2 (or however you want to depict it) successfully against Palace, who pressed the ball and didn't leave much space. Everton have had a bit of an injury crisis and a loss of form - their top playmaker in Mirallas is injured and defensively they have had a few issues. They've chopped and changed from 4-5-1 to 5-4-1 and lost to teams playing a 4-4-2... I think we should stick with the side that played at Palace, and look to manipulate the space in behind Baines and Coleman as they push forward. Palace had a lot of success cutting in from wide and Southampton created their chances by getting at their full backs. If 4-4-2 isn't working then we can bolster midfield with Fernandinho and withdraw Dzeko or Aguero and push Yaya further forward.

Either way it is a tough game that will raise the usual questions as to how we set up - fortunately we have plenty of options at the moment and Silva is rumoured to be a possible option too so we should create chances. Despite our record, Moyes is gone, their fans will be less hateful of us and it is a good time to play Everton. On the other side - they've beaten us without any fit strikers before so you never know. I think with what is at stake we will start well and an early goal will settle the game.

Songs for Saturday:

Red and White shite, Red and White shite, `ello, `ello, Red and White shite

Stand up if hate redshit, stand up if hate redshit

If you hate Liverpool clap your hands

Liverpool will win fuckall, Liverpool will win fuckall, so now your gonna believe us

Get the Bluedippers on our side and have the whole ground singing together. Then this WILL get to their players.

I think Vinny's performance at Liverpool showed that playing half fit defenders isn't a great idea.

I remember Everton playing Tony fecking Hibbert at centre back the other year, all 5ft 9' of him and never gave Dzeko a header, losing 1-0.

Hibbert is an Evertonian through and through, I would like to see him play this weekend!

Arsenal were missing half a team the other week, but showed that if our energy levels are crap, we make it a level playing field.
