Every premier league game this weekend to play French national anthem

Does anyone actually know the words? Will be pretty awkward when its just the backing music playing.

I believe they're playing a version sung by a choir.

Is this an age thing? Do younger people feel different about this than us old fogies? I'm in the "let them just wear black arm bands" camp and tend to look at some of these developments such as the red, white and blue buildings, as people trying to show off with technology. I read today that the Chelsea players will be wearing black arm bands incorporating the French tricolour, which just made my eyebrows rise a fraction. I accept that this might the Victor Meldrew in me coming out. Do the under 30s feel differently?

Where do we draw the line? Where was the PL support for the Russians, or Turks or Lebanese or Nigerians, why don't we sing Star Spangled Banner after the next high school massacre?

It's not a football problem, the tribute at Wembley was perfect as we were playing France. Now it feels like a competition of show emotion. Scudamore has done this for marketing reasons, nothing more and its more see through than a window.

A football match between City and Liverpool isn't the place for this but I said earlier in the thread, we are moving towards a world where every other minute of the game will be a minutes applause for a lost fan or player, and with a different minutes silence before each game for a tragedy somewhere in the world. It never used to be needed, just the minutes silence at New Year, but this is the Facebook age where one upmanship now includes competitive grieving.

Not football's problem? The major target was a football match, subsequent clear threats saw two other major games in completely different countries called off and then the most concerted public response was at a football match with massively increased security.

Even then, if you somehow disassociate football from it I still don't see much rational explanation for why it's so opposed - beyond the blandly unsupported need to "draw the line". There didn't used to be as many minutes silences so there shouldn't be now?

Anyone who has experienced the modern era can probably understand that all deaths are tragic but the symbolic reaction differs - I doubt the remembrance day threads were full of "OTT, ridiculous really".

I already know the first verse. Just brushing up on the second in readiness. It's a bit bloodthirsty, but so are some of the later ones in our anthem .

All together now:
Allons enfants de la Patrie.............

(PS. Can anyone attach the Monty Python sketch about a man with a tape recorder up each nostril? "And now, in stereo.....")

I stand by everything I said which was rationally explained to you and backed by the majority on this thread.

And saying 'where do we draw the line' is bland and unsupported simply means that you rank French deaths above those of other nations. Perhaps as you are going to the game with a French person?
