Explosions in Jerusalem

1) That's big of you 9 months on. I've seen stronger worded criticism of our away kit. If you haven't seen anyone supporting Russia you really haven't been paying attention.

2) Yes it's whataboutery, but if you want to talk about state terrorism and occupation of other country's land there is really only one country doing that at the moment. When a Palestinian state with clearly defined borders has been agreed and Israel is occupying its land you might have a point. At present Israel is occupying land that was occupied by Jordan prior to 1967, by Britain prior to 1948 and by the Ottoman Empire prior to 1917. Difficult for it to fuck off out of Palestine right now before its borders been defined. I have regularly criticised Israeli government policy when I believe it to be appropriate and the situation is a lot more nuanced than you make out.

Would you be happy for Israel to waive your right of return?

As I live in a country where the persecution of Jews has not been a major problem in recent history and any antisemitism is generally low level and on the fringes of society, and as I have never intended to emigrate to Israel, it wouldn’t really matter to me if my right of return was waived. Conversely it is nice to know there is a haven available if living somewhere becomes intolerable as has happened in Russia, Germany, Poland, Iran, Yemen, Morocco, Ethiopia and numerous other countries over the decades. It is a key part of Israel’s raison d’etre for it to fulfil this role so the policy is not going to change soon. A consequence of the policy is that there will always be immigrants who just want to live there for ideological / religious reasons but the majority are people escaping persecution and their descendants. I am against forcibly displacing the indigenous population to accommodate immigrants but that should not be necessary. Unfortunately the current government there don’t share that view.

There are plenty of countries to claim asylum in you don't need a special safe haven for the chosen people.

I'm not in favour on undoing the historic immigration into Israel but you can't have the asymmetrical and hypocritical situation that exists now.

The supposed claim on a right of return of the 5 million Palestinian people can cease at the same time.

Not sure why you have to bring in the biblical reference to Jews as “the chosen people”. Seems like you’re being somewhat pejorative by doing that.

It’s easy to say that there are plenty of countries to claim asylum but history shows that circumstances change with time. An example was the kindertransport from Nazi controlled territory to the UK prior to the war. Whilst it was commendable that this country admitted 10,000 children, there was huge opposition at the time and they were only admitted because the UK Jewish community funded it. Also the reason their parents did not come is because this country wouldn’t allow them so most ended up murdered by the Nazis. That’s just one example amongst many why many Jews believe that a nominally Jewish state is necessary that will welcome any Jews that are escaping persecution.

Regarding the 5 million descendants of the 700,000 Palestinians displaced during the war of independence, the solution is a quid pro quo that the similar number of Jews expelled from Arab lands that owned land much greater in area than what the Palestinians owned in Israel renounce any claim to that land in exchange for the Palestinians doing the same in Israel.

It’s not pejorative at all, that's the foundations of political zionism and the racist poison that dominates Israeli politics.

It’s not necessary to talk about WW2 and the holocaust, there isn't a realistic threat of that happening in North America or Europe.

If there was ever a need to claim asylum, a Jewish person could present at Israel and go through that process. For as long as it is the Jewish state then they will be accepted anyway.

A need for a theoretical safe haven doesn't necessitate the need for an easy route for regular economic or cultural migration.

The property rights is neither here nor there, with the passage of time, no one is going back. So it is just a question of compensation, tie it up with development funding and you take the sting out of it and offer an olive branch at the same time.
