I also have a "mate" that would like one of these boxes. What broadband speed is required?

Not an issue, even 100kBps would be fine.
The thing you need to see about is the ping.

Not sure what that is, can he check it?

He gets approx 5meg download speed

That is plenty of speed bud, speedtest.net also has a ping test.
If it is less that 15ms then he should be fine.

The person that set me up with a box and everything told me by the start of next prem season we'll be stuck with only standard def. programming. . Doesn't bother me really but I guess there are alternatives that'll still have HD. Obviously theres been talk of this happening for a while so it still may be nothing anyway.

It seems to be comming to an end, they have started to lose channels already. according to the people who do this for a living, HD will be gine from it soon, and soon to be followed by other channels.

from what i was told they have found a way to stop the signal to the old boxes that still allowed card share, once they roll out all the new boxes they can shut it off any time. I have one myself and have already started finding channels going missing. shame really it was excellent whilst it lasted.

It's been a great hobby but got ruined by greedy people running pay servers tbh, anyone who has a decent internet connection should look down the IPTV root now IMO, you can quite easily get every single PL,Bundesliga,La Liga etc game in (pretty much to the naked eye) HD.

I still have my motorised set up which I haven't struggled to find an away game on for last few years but not always in HD and often with foreign commentary.

Sky have started to pair HD channals differently, a fix is being worked on.

I wouldn't hold your breath for a fix. HD channels have long disappeared in other European countries and a fix has never surfaced.

The actual solution if you want HD is to get a cable box instead because the HD channels are all good on there.

Also Virgin Media are finally getting the other channels they've been missing in HD (SS3, SS4, SSF1, SSN, Sky News). I'm pretty sweet because I have a DM800 so I just need to order a DVB-C tuner (cable) for £15 and swap it out with the Sat tuner.

This isn't the same encryption change that happened when cableboxs went Nag3 and left all the boxs dud. I'm led to believe this is an epg data encryption change so maybe some cheeky coder will find a way for the Linux box to do its magic...Even if it doesn't come back on with IPTV and tsmedia plug in i'm still on a winner. Those who got openbox/skybox gubbins might be a little pissed off :)

Has my " mate" just wasted his £80 then? How long will "he" get out of it ?

Who can say mate, I wouldn't throw the toys out the pram just yet. The death of C/S as been predicted before.
